At the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Aalborg University Business School a PhD position in Macroeconomics is open from June 1 2026 or soon thereafter.

The PhD student is affiliated to the macroeconomic research group MaMTEP - (Macroeconomic Methodology Theory and Economic Policy). The duration of the position is three years.

Your work tasks and competencies
The main purpose of the PhD position is to contribute to the groups ongoing work on integrating environmental issues into macroeconomic models with the purpose of providing an assessment of the financial stability and physical risks given the current challenges. As such evaluating the financial stability and physical risks of the climate change and predict the trajectory of these given the different policies related to the transition towards a more sustainable economy is a core research focus of the PhD position. Familiarity with both orthodox as well as heterodox macroeconomics is prioritised as the research requires engagement in different macroeconomic paradigms.

The research will include:

  • Macroeconomic modelling (using SFC and other approaches)
  • Macroeconomic theory covering different paradigms in macroeconomics
  • Integration of financial data into the current database for Denmark
  • Econometrics and time-series analysis of the Danish data

The research is expected to contribute to the understanding of financial stability and physical risks within macroeconomic models with a particular focus on the Danish economy. Knowledge about the Danish economy will be considered an advantage. Likewise candidates are expected to take an active part in ongoing MaMTEPs research projects in general.

Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Humanities in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time. As part of the PhD study you are among other things required to complete PhD courses corresponding to 30 ECTS gain experience with teaching or other forms of knowledge dissemination and complete an external research stay outside of Aalborg University preferably 3-6 months at a foreign research institution.

Who we are
MaMTEP analyzes modern monetary macroeconomics by focusing on adjustment processes within globalized economies and employing Post-Keynesian theories regarding effective demand and uncertainty. The research group develops Stock-Flow Consistent (SFC) modeling to examine financial-real sector linkages while advocating for methodological pluralism in economic group provides teaching primarily in various courses to students in Economics at bachelors as well as masters level.
