GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking aBiologist Technician at the Thorne/Williams Wildlife Research Center.

This position will work as part of a three-member team supporting the daily care and husbandry of captive ungulates and carnivores. Responsibilities include assisting with maintenance and improvements to animal enclosures handling facilities buildings and grounds as well as helping with animal handling observations and biological sample collection for research projects. Department housing is provided and is required as a condition of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.

  • Provides daily care feeding and enrichment of captive wild ungulates and carnivores including the rearing of orphaned ungulates.
  • Constructs maintains and improves holding facilities buildings equipment and pastures.
  • Performs light service to vehicles and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains feeders automatic waterers corrals pastures and handling chutes.
  • Assists with animal restraint and sample collection of captive research animals.
  • Provides veterinary care to captive research animals as prescribed.
  • Uses calculator scale computer firearms scalpels knives syringes specialized capture and restraint equipment carpentry tools fencing tools mowers weed trimmers 4x4 pick-ups ATVs skid steers tractors and trailers.

Qualifications



PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


Preference will be given to those holding a bachelors degree in wildlife management range management biology animal science zoology or ichthyology.

**Must have a valid drivers license.



KNOWLEDGE:


  • Must be self-motivated to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry and handling techniques.
  • Skill in operation of common hand and power tools.
  • Skill in operating vehicles including 4x4 pickups ATVs and tractors/skid steer and implements.
  • Demonstrates an interest in learning or basic knowledge of principles of wildlife management and disease.
  • Experience working effectively with large and potentially dangerous wildlife.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of the use of firearms and specialized capture equipment.

Necessary Special Requirements


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Good physical condition is required including the ability to lift objects in excess of 75 pounds and work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work with live animals (ungulates and carnivores) and with hay pellets etc.
  • Residence in department-provided housing is a condition of employment; evening weekend and holiday rotations are shared with other employees of facility.

  • This position is based out of the Thorne/Williams Wildlife Research Center 2362 Highway 34 Wheatland Wyoming.
