Were looking for passionate individuals to join a new demonstrator that will shape the future enabling safe operations of Uncrewed Aerial Systems in the most challenging operational contexts and paving the way for effective collaboration between crewed and uncrewed vehicles in complex missions.

As part of a fast-paced agile team your mission will be to enable UAS to intelligently react to unforeseen situations and adverse external conditions so as to preserve the integrity of the flight and achieve its operational objectives.

The UAS (Uncrewed Aerial Systems) Airborne Planning and Decision-Making Lead (M/F) position is within Airbus UpNext Spain based in Getafe starting ASAP and it consists of a limited contract linked to the deliverable of the demonstrator - estimated completion date end of December 2028.


Main responsibilities

Development of Autonomous Decision-Making: Lead the technical development implementation and verification of the onboard autonomous decision-making function including trajectory planning and replanning algorithms and autonomous malfunctions management. Support critical technology benchmarking and trade studies to inform key make-or-buy and design decisions.

UAS Autonomy Architecture Design: Contribute to the design of a generic modular open systems hardware and software architecture to deploy flight functions in multiple Airbus UAS platforms. Focus on how the generic architecture can accommodate the decision-making function.

Systems Integration Validation & Verification: Oversee the end-to-end systems integration of the onboard decision-making function up to its operation in flight test. Contribute to define and drive the Verification & Validation (V&V) strategy and plan to ensure all technical requirements are successfully met including the development of an infrastructure to host real-time models simulating virtual aircraft systems. Contribute to define the test plan (ground-based and flight tests) to support the V&V.

Safety and Assurance: Contribute to the Safety and Assurance Strategy for the onboard decision-making autonomy function ensuring a robust approach to hazard analysis mitigation and the overall system safety case.

Knowledge Capitalization & Handover: Contribute to the analysis and capitalization of all technical data ensuring a complete and valuable technical handover of all project learnings and operational assets at completion.

Risks & Opportunities: Identify and analyze risks & opportunities affecting the development of the UAS autonomy architecture implementing corrective and preventive actions agreed within the project reviews.

What you bring:

  • Airborne software and hardware expertise.

  • Experience with classical and modern AI algorithms.

  • Expertise in trajectory planning and optimization.

  • Strong background in Flight Management and Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC).

  • Proficiency in Modeling and simulation including use of simulation to support algorithm design testing and validation.

  • Knowledge and experience on airspace operations.

  • Proven experience in systems engineering environments with a strong command of requirements management system integration and V&V methodologies.

  • Knowledge and experience with certification frameworks aerospace standards and operational approvals requirements including SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) framework for UAS.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary engineering teams manage technical risks and make critical decisions in a fast-paced agile technology development environment.

  • A holistic big picture systems thinking mindset with strong synthesis capacity and ability to translate high-level objectives into a concrete technical roadmap and complete set of detailed requirements.

  • Strong English communication skills to champion the projects technical vision to stakeholders and sponsors.

  • Eagerness to take initiatives to propose simpler and efficient ways of working. Impatience and burning desire to attain rapidly along with a healthy skepticism for progress. Ability to cope with short deadlines.
