General Summary of the Position
The school counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student development and achievement. The counselor is available to help students parents and teachers develop positive learning experiences in personal/social spiritual and academic development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position
- Works closely with the administration faculty and staff to support a climate and program fostering Christian growth and formation within the school community
- Plans initiates and evaluates a comprehensive guidance curriculum for all students
- Provides on-demand social-emotional lessons for targeted populations and goals
- Provides responsive counseling services for individual and small group needs including crisis intervention
- Helps with student planning to assist students in monitoring and understanding their academic development
- Collaborates with other staff to help write and implement Individual Accommodation Plans
- Assists the school administration in determining appropriate interventions and responses to student behavior
- Consults and collaborates with parents and staff to support students
- Maintains a communication system that effectively collects and delivers information about students to other professionals as appropriate
- Provides referrals for mental health services and psychoeducational testing
- Coordinate services of outside therapists working with students at school including Academic Language and Speech Therapists
- Other duties as assigned
- Abide by all policies as outlined in the Catholic Schools Office Handbook of Policies and Procedures for Elementary and Secondary Schools
Position Requirements
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Possess a knowledge of child and adolescent development and needs related to academic social and emotional growth
- Demonstrate respect for every individual by establishing workable relationships with colleagues students parents and other stakeholders
- Apply appropriate theories and techniques relevant to school counseling
- Provide crisis intervention including suicide and self-harm risk assessment and intervention
Education and Experience:
- Masters degree in counseling or related field required
- 3 years of teaching experience highly preferred
- Experience in a Catholic or independent school setting preferred
