Nature and Scope of Job:
- To act under the general direction of the Director of Special Education. TheCounselor for the Emotionally Disabled will provide counseling services to pupils in treating mental and emotional disorders. TheCounselor for the Emotionally Disabled will use established methods and procedures for assessment planning and implementation of mental health therapy to serve students who suffer from serious and persistent emotional mental and/or other behavioral challenges.
Job Functions:
Essential Functions:
- Assists students to overcome mental health issues that impede their learning and assists them in making sound educational choices.
- Provides individual and/or group therapy in an on-going manner as described by the students I.E.P.
- Provides mental health consultation to school staff whom work with skills programs students including recommendations interventions and approaches with specific mental health issues.
- Works closely with outside agencies that may be involved in the skills students wellbeing which may include attending meetings when appropriate (i.e. DFS Juvenile Probation courts etc.)
- Collects and interprets data for use in student placement decisions and instructional programs as needed.
- Consults with school administrators faculty and other special service personnel relative to the curricular offering which meet the abilities interest and needs of students.
- Collaborates with administrators and teachers in identifying students with special abilities and needs and in assisting to advise appropriate classroom and/or program placement.
- Supports the placement of identified students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment.
- Communicates effectively with students staff parents and community in a positive and professional manner.
- Counsels and serves as a resource for parents facing challenges affecting the educational physical emotional and social growth of their student receiving special education services.
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff to provide and facilitate a continuous flow of information concerning students with disability needs.
- Develop and implement effective counseling programming with individual and/or groups of students receiving special education services to provide assistance in meeting academic and social needs.
- Provide crisis counseling and consultation as needed.
Other Functions:
- Possess acquire and maintain a working knowledge of mental health diagnostic criteria therapeutic interventions therapeutic skills and techniques as they relate to working with students with disabilities and mental health.
- Maintain accurate complete legible and correct records as required by law school district policy and administrative regulation.
- Conduct oneself in accordance with professional and ethical standards and abide by the code of ethics commensurate with their licensure.
- Avails oneself of professional development opportunities in areas of critical need.
- Follow all school district policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
Job Qualification:
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Possess a knowledge of the current IDEA law Rules and Regulations Governing Students with Disabilities in Wyoming Public Schools and local rules and regulations.
- Possess a knowledge of basic computer processes on a personal computer as well as applications in the use of special education software.
- Possess the ability to follow and successfully complete both written and oral directions.
- Possess the ability to work with a variety of personality types throughout the work day.
- Possess sound emotional judgment.
- Possess the ability to accurately write and complete reports of a technical nature.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with supervisor colleagues and persons contacted through the course of work including families.
- The ability to thoroughly collect data and maintain accurate records .
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to meet deadlines and schedules.
Education License Certification or Formal Training:
- Proper licensure issued by the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board. A minimum of a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
Equipment Used: Personal Computer
Physical Demands:
- Possess strength and stamina to be able to remain in a seated position for up to 90 minutes at a time throughout the work day with a minimum of fatigue or discomfort.
- Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer for at least part of each day with a minimum of fatigue or discomfort.
- Possess strength and stamina to be able to remain in a standing position for up to 90 minutes at a time through the work day with a minimum of fatigue or discomfort.
- Possess sufficient strength to lift objects that weigh at least 50 pounds and move them more than 50 feet.
Environmental Demands:
- Air conditioned buildings. Occasional exposure to weather extremes. Fluorescent lighting.
