Our User Researchers ensure that the services we develop are grounded in genuine user need shaped by robust evidence and aligned to recognised standards.
The Role:
As an Intermediate User Researcher you will independently plan conduct and deliver user research activities across the service lifecycle contributing directly to the design and continuous improvement of public sector digital services.
You will work as part of multidisciplinary delivery teams collaborating closely with designers delivery managers and software engineers. Your research will inform service design decisions support evidence-led delivery and ensure services are accessible usable and inclusive.
While your primary specialism will be in user research we welcome candidates who bring or are keen to develop experience across the wider user-centred design (UCD) spectrum. This may include exposure to service design interaction design accessibility or business return we offer opportunities to broaden capability across UCD disciplines while deepening core research expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver end-to-end user research across discovery alpha and beta phases
- Select and justify appropriate research methodologies based on service stage risk constraints and user context
- Independently moderate one-to-one usability testing sessions and other qualitative research activities
- Apply a range of qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g. user interviews remote testing surveys heuristic evaluation competitor analysis information architecture activities)
- Analyse and synthesise research findings into clear evidence-based insights and actionable recommendations
- Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to translate research findings into practical service and design improvements
- Evaluate user journeys across multiple touchpoints proactively identifying usability and accessibility issues
- Coordinate research logistics including participant recruitment and management of external suppliers where required
- Present findings and recommendations confidently to senior stakeholders articulating implications and trade-offs
- Support and mentor early-career colleagues in developing research capability
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of Informed Solutions user-centred design standards and practices
RequirementsEssential Skills and Experience
- Demonstrable experience independently planning conducting and moderating usability testing sessions
- Strong practical understanding of user-centred design principles and iterative evidence-led delivery
- Proven ability to select and apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods with clear awareness of their strengths and limitations
- Experience synthesising complex findings into clear actionable recommendations that inform service decisions
- Confidence engaging with senior stakeholders and using evidence to influence outcomes
- Experience working within Agile multidisciplinary delivery environments
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outputs in fast-paced settings
- Experience using commercial UX research tools
- Strong planning organisational and time management skills
Desirable
- Experience delivering digital services aligned to recognised standards (e.g. GDS Service Standard)
- Experience working within a consultancy environment ideally delivering government services
- Strong awareness of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles
- Experience contributing to other areas of user-centred design such as service design UX/UI design or business analysis
