Position Description

Definition
LVMPD internships are unpaid volunteer positions. LVMPD internships are offered only to currentcollege students not grantedto individuals merely wanting to obtain work experience and must be performed in return for college credits toward graduation. Internships are generally performed on a part time basis for instance 20 hours per week within one semester.No free housing is offered regardless of whether the successful candidate is an out-of-state student. The following LVMPD units have accepted interns in the past: Crime Scene Investigations (for students interested in pursuing a career in CSI) Cold Cases Missing Persons Victim Services Unit Recruiting Forensic Laboratory Emergency Management and Counter Terrorism. However actual availability of internships in the different LVMPD sections varies by semester based on mentor availability.

Interns have no law enforcement power.They are students currently in an advanced stage of their college studies desiring to pursue a career in law enforcement criminal justice or a related field upon college graduation. Typically assigned a mentor interns acquire the necessary knowledge and skills while providing non-commissioned non-hazardous support and/or research services to the LVMPD unit assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions

Internship applicants must:

  1. Be endorsed by the college/university for the proposed internship.
  2. Be age 18 and above.
  3. Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident alien.
  4. Be a current student of good academic standing with a 2.75 GPA or higher enrolled in an accredited United States college/university that offers credits counted towards graduation for completing an internship with a law enforcement or criminal justice agency.
  5. Have already completed the first year in an Associates degree program or the second year in a Bachelors degree program; or currently pursuing a Masters degree.
  6. Be able to work a minimum of eight hours per week.
  7. Be available to travel to Las Vegas at their own expense for an in-person background interview (out-of-area successful candidates).
Position-specific Condition
Interns may be required to work nights and weekends depending on assignment.

Best Candidates Willhave already committed to majoring in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Emergency Management Police Science Public Administration Forensic Science Biology Chemistry Biochemistry Genetics Marketing or a related field.

Detention Services: Will have already committed to majoring in Criminal Justice Police Science Social Work Corrections or a related field.

Selection Process

  • Minimum qualifications screening.
  • Application packet reviewed by respective LVMPD area for consideration.
  • If selected meet with a background investigator at LVMPD Headquarters Las Vegas at the students expense. Out of state applicants are advised to take the time and expense involved in this process into consideration prior to applying.
  • Background investigation lasting 90 days in most cases. **
  • Candidate notified of background investigation results.
**No intern candidate is exempt from the background process regardless of previous employment or any jurisdiction.Out of state applicants must take the above into consideration before applying so that graduation requirements are met.

At this time the LVMPD does not hire interns on a provisional hire basis. Therefore all background requirements must be completed prior to the start of the internship.

**Due to security reasons personal belongings permitted in the facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks briefcases duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees conducting the process and may be subject to a search.

Additional Selection Process

The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete. You must also meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards. This is a continuous recruitment with no closing date. However successful candidates are assigned to a work unit in LVMPD at the beginning of a semester Spring Summer and Fall.

In addition as this is a continuous recruitment applicants must be specific in the month and year when they desire to start their internship or their application will be considered incomplete.
