Assistant Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic

Transport logistics companybased in Durban requires the services of an Assistant Diesel Mechanic.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Diesel Mechanic supports the Senior Mechanic and Workshop Team in maintaining servicing and repairing company vehicles equipment and machinery. The role ensures that all vehicles and equipment are kept in safe operational condition minimizing downtime and maintaining compliance with safety standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

• Perform basic mechanical repairs under supervision.
• Change oil filters brake pads belts and other consumables.
• Assist with engine diagnostics and fault finding.
• Analyses diagnostic test results received accurately
• Repairing or replacing engines and transmissions
• Repairing or replacing steering and braking system
• Performing preventative maintenance
• Ensuring all scheduled maintenance is performed correctly and in a timely manner.

Fleet & Equipment Support

• Assist with routine servicing of vehicles and machinery.
• Conduct pre-delivery inspections.
• Perform daily/weekly vehicle condition checks.
• Support breakdown assistance and emergency repairs.
• Assist in maintaining service schedules and maintenance logs.
• Clean and maintain tools and workshop equipment.

Workshop Operations

• Housekeeping - Ensure workshop cleanliness and organization.
• Assist in ordering and managing spare parts.
• Follow all safety procedures and company policies.
• Ensure tools are stored properly after use.
• Equipment calibration and maintenance.

Compliance & Reporting

• Report faults defects or safety risks immediately.
• Preparing updating records on Job cards and via communication channel on work carried out.
• Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately.
• Adhere to occupational health and safety standards.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

• Reduced vehicle downtime.
• Compliance with maintenance schedules.
• Accuracy of maintenance records.
• Workshop safety compliance.
• Turnaround time on basic repairs.

Education & Qualifications

• Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
• 13 years experience in a mechanical workshop environment preferred.
• Trade test (red seal) (advantageous).
• Technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering (advantageous).
• Experience working with trucks fleet vehiclespreferably with regards to Volvo trucks (advantageous).
• Valid drivers license
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Highly developed attention to detail
