The Director of Coding at Emory Healthcare is responsible for leading coding operations ensuring regulatory compliance and optimizing revenue through accurate coding practices. This role provides leadership to coding professionals implements coding policies conducts audits and collaborates with clinical and revenue cycle teams. The Director also oversees vendor relationships for contracted coding services and analyzes coding data to drive operational and financial performance improvements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads coding operations to ensure accurate coding practices and regulatory compliance across the organization.
Manages and develops a team of coding professionals responsible for medical record coding.
Implements coding policies procedures and operational standards to support compliance and efficiency.
Collaborates with clinical and revenue cycle teams to support accurate documentation and coding practices.
Analyzes coding data and operational performance metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
OVERSEE CODING OPERATIONS
Ensures adherence to coding guidelines accuracy in documentation and timely claim submissions.
Reports key performance indicators and operational metrics to revenue cycle leadership.
Monitors operational reports to ensure timely bill processing.
Optimizes staffing models and ratios to support operational efficiency.
ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH CODING STANDARDS & REGULATIONS
Maintains current knowledge of coding guidelines industry regulations and compliance requirements.
Implements and enforces coding policies and procedures across the organization.
MONITOR ACCURACY OF CODING
Conducts regular audits to assess coding accuracy and compliance.
Collaborates with compliance teams to maintain regulatory standards.
Provides ongoing education and training initiatives for coding staff.
ANALYZE CODING DATA TO IDENTIFY TRENDS & OPPORTUNITIES
Reviews coding data to identify trends and operational improvement opportunities.
Implements strategies to optimize coding performance and maximize revenue capture.
MAINTAIN & ENHANCE CODING SOFTWARE SYSTEMS
Collaborates with the Emory Digital team to ensure coding-related software systems remain functional optimized and aligned with operational needs.
BUDGET OVERSIGHT OF CONTRACTED CODING SERVICES
Maintains vendor oversight for contracted coding services.
Reviews and analyzes vendor invoices to ensure accuracy accountability and appropriate budget utilization.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Travel may be required less than 10% of the time.
Work type: Hybrid position splitting time between remote work and in-office work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in Business Administration Management Health Administration or a related field required.
Six (6) years of progressive medical record coding experience with supervisory responsibilities required.
Demonstrated understanding of how to manage organizational resources to achieve enterprise-wide impact.
