PURPOSE
This position is for summer 2026 only. Summer school dates are June 1-June 26 2026.
(Teachers are paid for the days they work plus the one extra day for building meetings open house etc. Juneteenth is not a paid holiday for summer school. Hourly staff are only paid for the days they work.)
This position is for an EL teacher who will work with EL newcomers at the middle school level in our EL Newcomer Center at West Middle School. The EL teacher will design and implement language instruction and intervention for students who are identified as English Leaners (EL). The EL teacher will provide support to EL students in their classrooms and in the content areas. The EL teacher will be expected to develop and deliver group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines within all content areas. The EL teacher will work collaboratively with classroom teachers in a capacity that includes but is not limited to helping differentiate instruction and assessment of EL students and providing on-going support to classroom teachers as they implement EL strategies. The EL teacher could be responsible for administering the EL screening test to students who are new to the school. The EL teacher must maintain all state and district required documentation on EL students and will serve as a liaison between the school the classroom teachers the parents/guardians of EL students the district EL office and district interpreters.
Teachers who are new to teaching EL are expected to attend paid professional development meeting(s) prior to the start of summer school. This usually consists of 1-3 hours of paid professional development.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Serves as lead teacher co-teacher and intervention teacher for EL students in language development classes and all other content areas.
- Serves as liaison among the school classroom teachers parents/guardians students district personnel and community organizations that support EL students and families.
- Secures language interpreters for parent meetings and school events as needed.
- Administers EL screening test to students who are new to the school. Maintains proper testing protocol regarding these tests.
- Follows all administrative directives and federal state and district guidelines and policies regarding EL students and collaboration with their parents/guardians.
- Works with classroom and content teachers to differentiate instruction assignments and assessments and accurately assign grades to the work of EL students in their classes.
- Attends professional development sessions for EL summer school teachers and staff.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated both individually and collaboratively.
- Plans and implements a program of study that as much as possible meets the individual needs interests and abilities of all students using data-driven decision-making.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of all students.
- Prepares for assigned classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes and communicates clear objectives to students for all lessons and units.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups involved.
- Collaborates with administrators colleagues and parents in a positive and productive manner.
- Strives to implement by instruction and action the Districts philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Evaluates the learning problems of students on a regular basis seeking assistance of District specialists as needed and/or required.
- Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure while maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and appropriate manner.
- Makes provisions for being available to students staff and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) where applicable.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as needed.
- Understands and adheres to Board policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum: Appropriate academic preparation to be certified by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in appropriate content area. Missouri ESOL endorsement is required.
Preferred: Prior teaching experience either at the elementary or secondary level preferred. Bilingual preferred. Familiarity with standardized tests ability to analyze data and experience with special education would be considered assets. Excellent computer skills required. Knowledgeable in SIOP and/or other best practices for EL learning.
