DESCRIPTION

The Fire Crew Supervisor Trainee (FCS-T)recruitment is an Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) internal recruitment. ONLY applications from current qualified OCFA non-probationary Fire Captains non-probationary Fire Apparatus Engineers and non-probationary Firefighters will be accepted.


The FCS-T is a developmental opportunity designed to build advanced wildland fire experience and supervisory qualifications within the hand crew program supporting succession planning. The FCS-T will actively pursue and complete the Position Task Books (PTB) required for the qualifications in the following hand crew leadership positions:
  • Squad Boss (Crew Boss PTB)
  • Assistant Superintendent (Strike Team Leader-Crew PTB and Firing Boss PTB)
  • Superintendent (Division/Group Supervisor PTB)

The FCS-T assists the Hand Crew Superintendent in supervising a hand crew during daily operations wildland firefighting prescribed fire and all-risk assignments. Duties include participating in daily operational briefings completing fuels and project assignments performing lookout and scouting functions operating hand and power tools conducting ignition and holding operations and coordinating with aircraft heavy equipment and engines to safely accomplish the mission.

WORK SCHEDULE: The FCS-T position requires a maximum two (2) year assignment based on position task book needs. The position will work a 4/10 schedule in a two-week cycle. Work schedules may be adjusted based on organizational need.

COMPENSATION
Employees assigned to a FCS-T position will be eligible to receive Staff Assignment Pay (SAP) and Staff Incentive Pay (SIP).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Current OCFA non-probationary Fire Captain non-probationary Fire Apparatus Engineer ornon-probationary Firefighter


CERTIFICATIONS:

In order to be eligible to participate in the selection process applicants must have completed the required certifications to open a PTB in one of the following:

Crew Boss (Page 71)

Strike Team Leader Crew (Page 68)

Firing Boss (Page 75)

Division Group Supervisor (Page 66)

A copy of your certifications must be attached to the electronic application time of application or deliver to Human Resources no later than 12:00PM (noon) on March 19 2026. Failure to submit proof of documentation by March 19 2026 will result in disqualification from the selection process.


LICENSE:

  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver License with a firefighter endorsement and a valid DL546 on file with the DMV may be required for some assignments.
  • Possession of and maintenance of Emergency Medical Technician I/Fire Services

This classification is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program which periodically provides Risk Management with the incumbents Driver License record and status.


HIGHLY DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:

  • Two (2) years of federal state or local wildland fireline experience.

Placement on the candidate pool list will be established based on successful completion of all recruitment process components.
