About the Opportunity
Perform a wide variety of duties to successfully complete assigned Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC trade tasks and in the absence of the Supervisor assist in supervising technicians to ensure the timely accurate completion of assigned jobs. Prioritize and assign work to Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC personnel in a fashion that maintains developed Service Level Agreements with a focus on customer needs. Direct workflow and ensure all work is completed both physically and administratively in a timely and accurate fashion. Assist the Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC Supervisor as needed to run the everyday needs of the Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC unit including but not limited to; training staff and ensuring adherence to safety standards. Assist supervisor in maintaining weekly computerized timesheets and records for overtime absence and vacation records. Assist in maintaining a positive working environment notifying the supervisor of concerns relating to employee morale.
The Foreperson position is primarily to oversee assign and on occasions when staffing and schedule require perform a variety of Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC duties to complete maintenance and repair tasks. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean safe and orderly condition. Follow prescribed university safety rules and regulations. Maintain necessary files and records; prepare periodic reports as directed. Assist Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC Supervisor with the scheduling and agenda for regular Shop Meetings that discuss updated work processes equipment staff concerns safety and campus updates. Oversee vendor scheduling of outsourced maintenance and repairs. Position is the primary contact for responding to overtime and emergency call-ins to ensure proper plant operations. Must also be willing to act as a backup on emergency call-in list in the event that other Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC staff are not available and as necessary to assist other Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC personnel on overtime projects. Special projects and added assignments as needed and directed by Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC Supervisor.
Must have a minimum of five years Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC experience with a Massachusetts license in one of the trades disciplines of Pipe Fitter Plumbing or HVAC required.
Must have a valid drivers license.
Additional licenses in other trade disciplines (Sprinkler Fitter Master Plumber or advanced HVAC certifications) are desired.
Must be skilled in mechanical plumbing and HVAC areas. Ability to read and work from blueprints diagrams sketches and specifications as required. Must have experience in new construction remodeling repairs and maintenance of institutional commercial and residential buildings. Oil burner servicing experience and refrigeration knowledge helpful. Must have or obtain Class I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators License within one (1) year of employment.
Must be able to cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate installation and repair of pipe ductwork and fittings using hand tools and power tools. Cut and thread pipe using pipe cutters. Join pipes by use of screws bolts mechanical fittings solder and plastic solvent and caulk joints. Install maintain and repair HVAC equipment including air handlers chillers boilers and control systems.
Must have a working knowledge of sprinkler and fire protection systems pumps sewer ejectors heating and cooling systems and building automation systems. Must be able to work in confined spaces such as manholes ejector pits and mechanical rooms. Must be familiar with OSHA safety regulations.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and transport piping ductwork and equipment more than 200 lbs. with others. May use chain falls and come-alongs for heavier lifting. Must be able to push and pull heavy loads as required. Must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time; work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods; routinely walk to and from various buildings carrying tools equipment and other essentials to the job site. Must be able to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs work off ladders staging lifts etc.
Must possess the ability to use computer-based software tools including Computerized Maintenance Management (CMMS) Systems. Must have the ability to provide leadership and direction to the Mechanical Plumbing & HVAC trade staff.
Position will require working in a cross-functional capacity across mechanical plumbing and HVAC disciplines when necessary as well as responding to overtime and emergency call-ins as required or directed to ensure proper plant operations.
This position requires a criminal background check.
All University staff members must successfully complete a 90-day probationary period.
Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC Foreman is considered Essential Personnel. This is a condition of employment.
40-hour work week/ non-exempt. Position is THIRD SHIFT. Hours: Sunday PM Friday AM; 9:30PM 6:00AM (Monday through Friday).
Must be able to work overtime to maintain the Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC facilities of the entire university plant.

The base pay listed excludes the 3rd shift differential. The 3rd shift hourly rate inclusive of differential is $55.65/hr.
