Position Overview

The Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) is seeking an experienced Pension Calculations Specialist to support the Financial & Employer Services Division. This role is responsible for accurately calculating pension benefits and related payment adjustments for ASRS members.

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills experience working in structured compliance-driven environments and proficiency in financial calculations and data verification. This position is remote but requires the ability to come into the Phoenix office as needed.

Key Responsibilities Benefit Calculations
  • Perform complex pension retirement and survivor benefit calculations.
  • Process account adjustments and non-standard disbursement requests with precision.
Data Integrity & Compliance
  • Ensure accuracy of all member data used for benefit calculations.
  • Apply IRS regulations ASRS statutes and internal policies to all calculations and reporting.
  • Validate compliance in payouts and documentation.
Financial Analysis & Research
  • Investigate discrepancies in member accounts and employer-provided information.
  • Review and verify financial transactions and reporting system data.
  • Resolve escalated benefit-related issues using analytical reasoning.
Member & Employer Support
  • Communicate professionally with employers to verify records gather information and resolve issues.
  • Provide clear accurate responses to benefit-related inquiries.
System Management
  • Utilize various computer systems databases and manual processes to retrieve information calculate payouts and process exceptions.
  • Work with relational databases and spreadsheets to analyze data and prepare reports.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Analytical Skills: Strong mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities; capable of handling high-volume deadline-driven workloads.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    • Advanced Excel skills (formulas pivot tables analysis tools)
    • Experience working with relational databases
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to work within strict guidelines and maintain accuracy.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication for professional correspondence with employers and internal teams.
  • Compliance Awareness: Ability to learn and apply IRS rules state statutes and internal policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a financial institution pension fund or banking environment.
  • Familiarity with automated disbursement systems and pension/benefits administration.
