Job Description:

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission seeks motivated applicants to fill the Fish Culturist/Supervisor position at the Calamus State Fish Hatchery where they will assist the Fish Production Manager to lead a diverse crew to support cold cool and warm water aquaculture and fisheries management conservation and research programs. The Fish Culturist/Supervisor assists with multiple fish culture and aquatic programs within the Fisheries Division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. This position reports to the Fish Production Manager and assist and supervises Conservation Technicians. This is an opportunity to be a leader role model and mentor while carrying out fish culture practices to meet program and agency goals.

JOB DUTIES: The position will assist the Fish Production Manager in the planning coordination and execution of the fisheries production plan. Conduct routine fish health and nutrition assessment diagnosis and treatment of disease water quality and aquatic vegetation control. Operate specialized equipment for water quality assessment chemistry and laboratory work. Assist in the training planning direction and assign duties of permanent and temporary personnel. Work leader on assigned projects and maintains daily routine workflow consistent with the Fish Production Manager. Assist in the maintenance of records developing budgets inventories and monthly reports of expenses production distribution and pollution control monitoring. Plan perform assist and supervise the maintenance of equipment vehicles buildings grounds and ponds. Participate in public relations work through tours and questions of visitors. Attend meetings seminars and various training to keep up with commission and fish culture topics and technology. Presents technical reports to professionals organizations and the general public regarding all aspects of hatchery management and fish production. Assist with interagency projects. Perform other related duties as required or assigned. Required to be available 24 hours a day on a work rotation. May be required to work alone on weekend rotation basis and is responsible for facility management decisions in absence of Fish Production Manager.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework/training in fish or wildlife management fisheries or biology or four years of experience in fish culture work or fisheries management.

Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries or related field plus two years experience in fish culture work or fisheries management. Valid drivers license required.

Other : Incumbent must acquire an aquatic pesticide applicators license within the first year of hire.

Residing in State provided housing is required. Housing is provided as a condition of employment for the benefit of the state. Living on site to monitor activity and life support systems provides security to protect the facility and live product often outside traditional business hours.

Work schedule and physical working conditions: 8 hour workday 40 hour work week many activities require work outside assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules. Facility responsibilities are 24 hrs./day on a rotational basis to monitor water supply and manage water conditioning equipment. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in variable and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Ability to work in hot and cold wet conditions in and around water. May require working alone in remote locations. Able to respond to emergencies quickly and work outside normal work hours. Travel is required for short periods of time to accomplish commission goals and required training. Ability to lift and move fifty (50) pounds.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of fish hatchery management propagation of fish species and fish culture techniques. Familiarity of federal and state laws commission regulations and policy and fiscal procedures pertaining to fish and wildlife; principles and practices of fish culture; fish disease water chemistry parameters; research methods and techniques used in the field; statistical data analysis; computer spreadsheets and data management; equipment techniques used to capture census age sex and mark various fish species; habitat and history of fish species; fish and wildlife conservation programs. Skills in pond and raceway management. Ability to operate and maintain various vehicles power tools electrical instruments scientific equipment sampling gear and fish hatchery equipment; train and supervise assigned hatchery staff; experience leading individuals and teams excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects. Ability to develop positive personal relationships and build productive teams. Ability to assemble organize and process data by recognized scientific techniques; evaluate and analyze fish management plans and develop recommendations for improvement; communicate fisheries concepts to diverse user groups and the public. Ability to be flexible and creative in response to changing circumstances and directives. Ability to respond to facility requirements at any time day or night. Assists other work units which may require travel and stay away from home unit overnight.
