Job Summary

UNIVERSITY ROYAL NAVAL UNIT CAMBRIDGE

Primary Purpose.

To act as the Coxswain (Coxn) of University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) Cambridge responsible to the Officer in Charge (OiC) for the leadership management and administration of all unit personnel Cadets and activities in pursuance of the URNU mission:

Developing and engaging young people through maritime experience adventure and Royal Navy ethos

Secondary Purposes

  • The secondary purposes of the Cambridge URNU Coxn are to:
  • Support the work of the OiC in raising and maintaining public awareness of the Royal Navy.
  • Assist in strengthening links between the URNU and the Maritime Reserves.
  • Maintain links between the URNU and other University Service Units and between the URNU and the academic community.
  • Raise awareness of career opportunities in the regular and reserve Service amongst Cadets and unit Training Officers.

Superiors

The Coxn is accountable to the unit OiC who will act as 1RO for all aspects of these terms of reference. Officer Commanding URNU South will act as 2RO.

Authority

The URNU Coxn has :

Line authority over the Cambridge Unit Training Officers and Cadets.

Authority to communicate with Service and external agencies as required on unit matters and as required by the OiC Regional HQ and URNU HQ on URNU-wide matters.

Principal Task

To contribute towards the shared Duty of Care for URNU Cadets whilst they undertake URNU Activities within and outside URNU Cambridge.

Secondary Tasks

The secondary tasks of the Coxn URNU Cambridge are to:

  • Act as Line Manager for the Regional Administration Officer (RAO) if / when collocated with URNU Cambridge.
  • Act as the unit Training and Finance administrator
  • Support the RAO in the management of electronic filing systems.
  • Administer pay and travelling allowances via the RSU / HQ iaw latest guidance.
  • Act as the termination officer.
  • Act as career manager on JPA.

Act as the Motor Transport Officer (MTO) iaw JSP 800:

  • Carry out monthly accounting on Authorise to Use Documents (ATUDs).
  • Conduct checks and controls.
  • Manage fuel card/fuel logs.
  • Act as a custodian for vehicles fuel cards and fuel logs.
  • Maintain transaction logs.
  • Act as a matrix test/FMT 600 co-ordinator.
  • Act as a unit driver.
  • Act as Unit Fund Treasurer conducting their duties iaw BR18.
  • Administer the unit budget on behalf of the OiC.
  • To hold the unit Goods and Services ePC.
  • Arrange facilities for training nights and non-P2000 activities.
  • Co-ordinate logistics for sea training.
  • Act as the unit IT administrator.
  • Act as a unit first aider.
  • Update recruiting and informative literature within the Unit.
  • Liaise with other Service units associated bodies within the universities and local community.
  • Supervise discipline dress and conduct within the Unit.
  • To manage unit stores including uniform clothing and PLT equipment. To hold the unit AinU.

Act as the Unit SHEF representative:

  • Maintain unit SHEF output for the OiC.
  • Enforce H&S at work within the unit.
  • Maintain the unit SHEF log.
  • Ensure SHEF awareness within the unit.
  • Prepare for SHEF audits as directed including self-audit.
  • Act as risk assessor.

Act as Unit Security Adviser:

  • Advise on compliance of security regulations iaw JSP 440.
  • Advise on risks associated with non-compliance of security regulations.
  • Manage physical security.
  • Administer unit safes.
  • Maintain unit security log.
  • Advise on security breach procedures.
  • Manage Unit keys.
  • Maintain Navy Command Information Asset Register (NCIAR)
  • Unit Sponsor for vetting of Training Officers and Cadets.
  • Act as the trophy officer and maintain Unit Asset Log.

Additional Tasks

To support and carry out general military duties as required by the OiC.
