Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse provides patient care in routine situations and performs non-professional tasks in the nursing unit. Maintains an orderly and safe physical environment.

Application Window: Thursday March 5th - Thursday March 12th

Program Dates: Monday June 1st 2026 Friday August 7th 2026

What to Expect: Orientation begins your adventure introducing you to the culture and mission of Gillette Childrens as well as the ins and outs of your specific unit. Youll dive into hands-on training structured classroom sessions and learn alongside healthcare professionals who are leading the way in pediatric care. From mastering essential policies procedures and pain management techniques to ensuring safety standards and navigating electronic medical records this program sets you up for success every step of the way.

Employment and Scheduling:

Summer Interns work 32 to 40 hours per week (day/evening rotation). This internship offers $21.00/hr and Summer Interns are eligible to receive additional pay for evening night and weekend shifts. They are not eligible for benefits. Summer Interns may be expected to rotate shifts.

Summer Interns are expected to work weekends and holidays as their schedule requires.

Summer Intern Skills and Development:

  • Assisting with the collection and reporting of data (e.g. vital signs vascular and neurological checks and responses to pain management medications/side effects).
  • Participate in therapeutic communication.
  • Contribute to patients nursing care plans.
  • Provide patient care based on validated skills:
    • Oral nasal and tracheal suctioning
    • Intermittent indwelling catheterization
    • Use of a bladder scan
    • Enteral feedings and care of feeding tubes
    • Tracheostomy cares
    • Application and cares of adaptive equipment devices
    • Cast cares
    • Nursing Assistant tasks such as ADLs and feeding
    • Turning/positioning and ambulation

Requirements:

  • Must be entering the final year of nursing school and have no previous professional experience as an RN.
  • Must have current CPR BLS for Healthcare Providers per American Heart Association guidelines.
  • Previous experience working with children in the capacity of baby-sitting volunteering and/or nursing school for pediatric rotation.
  • Is in the process of learning theoretical and practical knowledge of nursing has rudimentary skills in performing the technical aspects and knowledge of procedures care of hospitalized patients equipment supplies and instruments available to assist in patient comfort and recovery.
  • Some understanding of mechanical principles is necessary for using hospital equipment instruments and knowledge of hospital record keeping.
  • Must be able to attend Summer Nurse Intern orientation and participate in the entire length of the Summer Nurse Internship program.
  • Must be able to provide two letters of recommendation (at least one from nursing faculty; one professional letter of recommendation relevant to the position is also acceptable)
  • Must enroll in a Summer Nurse Internship course at one of Gillettes educational partners in Minnesota.
    • The Summer Nurse Intern is responsible for the tuition/fees related to this course.
