We are looking for friendly practical and community-minded people to join our Major Incident Support Team (MIST) in Thames. This is a volunteer non-clinical role where you will play an important part in supporting ambulance crews and helping communities during a range of situations.
As a MIST member you could be assisting ambulance crews with patient lifting helping set up support operations at events such as music festivals or providing logistical support during incidents ranging from local emergencies to large-scale national disasters. Whether its a planned event or an unexpected crisis you will be part of the essential support team working behind the scenes to help ambulance operations run smoothly and to make a meaningful difference in your community.

Responsibilities As a MIST member your key tasks may include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining operational readiness of all MIST vehicles and equipment
- Safely relocating and operating support command or specialist vehicles
- Responding to major incidents and events to undertake roles such as logistics welfare communications safety or team leader
There are 4 areas where you can be involved (although you may not be needed at each event). These include Administration Communications Welfare and Logistics.
Training To set you up for success all new MIST members complete an initial foundation training programme. This includes a two-day induction to Hato Hone St John two days of Operational Risk Management training and two days of driving training. Together these courses provide the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate vehicles and equipment safely and confidently in emergency environments.
Following the foundation training members will also complete a two-day 4WD training course organised by Hato Hone St John. Throughout the year we also run training days to support ongoing learning and operational readiness and members are expected to take part in these sessions.
Please note you must live within 20-minute drive of Thames Station (1102 Queen Street Thames 3578).
Qualifications :

To thrive in this role youll need to:
- Hold a current full and clean New Zealand Class 1 Drivers Licence
- Hold a Level 2 First Aid Certificate-or be willing to obtain one as part of onboarding
- Attend at least one training session per month to maintain operational readiness
- Be ready to deploy within 30 minutes of activation (when availability has been indicated)
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrate strong communication skills and a keen eye for detail
- Maintain a good level of physical fitness
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Consistently role model the core values of Hato Hone St John: Do the right thing Side by side Straight up Make it better Open minds
