Position Summary

We seek an enthusiastic dynamic and student-centered Upper School History and Social Science teacher who will cultivate students intellectual curiosity and foster critical thinking and is passionate about inspiring students to engage with the complexities of history and social sciences. Preference will be given to candidates capable of teaching Economics.

The recent addition of The Studios three academic and creative spaces offering virtual reality podcasting and XR film technology make this an exciting time to join our humanities faculty.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in several of the following: Ancient & Non-Western World History Modern World History U.S. History Government and/or Economics. (Economics is priority)

  • Help students develop writing and research skills.

  • Design and implement an engaging comprehensive curriculum that aligns with the schools mission and values emphasizing critical thinking and analytical skills.

  • Integrate a variety of perspectives primary sources and relevant current events into lesson plans.

  • Establish an engaging student-centered discussion-driven and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation and active engagement. We are a school that believes deeply in Mind Brain and Education science (MBE) practices annually supports faculty professional development in this area and is a partner school with the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL).

  • Maintain consistent and appropriate communication with students parents and advisors to foster student growth and development.

  • Mentor and develop student relationships by establishing and maintaining positive respectful and supportive relationships with students understanding and responding to their individual needs.

  • Be committed to Professional Development by staying current with educational best practices. Stay abreast of trends and best practices in technology use for students and faculty.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to share insights strategies and resources for continuous improvement.

  • Serve an advisor to a small group of students. Advisors communicate and consult with parents over all aspects of their childrens education academic social and emotional.

  • Candidates are expected to participate meaningfully to the DCDS community by contributing to the student experience by leading a club and/or coaching.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in aHistory/Social Science related field; advanced degree preferred.

  • Proficient and enthusiastic user of technology with an understanding of technologys role in the classroom.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Professional collegiality a desire to grow and enthusiasm for young people.

  • Teaching experience in 9th grade preferred.

  • Experience in helping students develop writing and research skills preferred.

  • Global/Ancient/Non-Western History/Studies background preferred.

  • Experience teaching Economics is a plus.

  • Preference to candidates with coaching experience or expressed willingness to coach or direct activities
