If you love keeping traffic flowing safely this role is for you!TheDepartment ofTransportation Services (DTS) Traffic Signal and Technology Division is looking for two (2) reliable Traffic Signal Inspectors! This full-time permanent role in Honolulu involves checking traffic signal and camera construction to ensure it meets required standards identifying and correcting construction problems coordinating signal activation and changeovers and estimating completed work and repair costs.

What You Will Do
  • Inspect construction work for compliance with roadway sidewalk electrical environmental and street usage standards to ensure all work meets City State and Federal requirements.
  • Ensure safe traffic control and pedestrian protection by evaluating work zones coning signing and safeguards and require corrections to maintain safe travel conditions.
  • Verify electrical installations meet code by inspecting traffic signal conduits cables fiber optics power sources transformers and meters in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Review and interpret traffic signal plans by reading complex drawings and schematics locating existing underground utilities and approving or modifying contractor signal layouts.
  • Correct deficiencies and enforce compliance by identifying faulty workmanship improper materials or methods and stopping construction work until standards are met.
  • Document work and manage costs by preparing daily and monthly inspection reports estimating completed work for payment identifying cost impacts and reporting violations or discrepancies to supervisors.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Special Working Conditions
  • Work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
  • May encounter construction site hazards and traffic safety risks while performing inspections.
  • Must be able to perform shift work during emergency events or EOC activation.
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays as required.
  • This role is assigned to service the Joint Traffic Management Center (JTMC).
  • May be required to complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check in accordance with HRS 846-2.7 (b)(37).

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Four years of journey level electrician or related experience involving theinstallation maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment.

Must be able to:

  • Understand basic electrical and electronic principles related to traffic signal systems.
  • Identify traffic signal equipment materials and fixtures including transformers and meters.
  • Apply proper installation methods and practices for traffic signal systems.
  • Comply with applicable codes ordinances regulations and safety practices.
  • Read and interpret traffic signal plans and specifications.
  • Observe construction work and identify improper methods or practices.
  • Estimate equipment and material costs for traffic signal projects.
  • Prepare clear and accurate inspection reports.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors.
  • Interact professionally with the general public.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1. Valid Drivers License (Type 3).
2. Current State of Hawaii Journey Level Electricians or Specialty Electricians License.
