Job Summary

Reports to: NTAEL Coordinator

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Pay Family: Professional/Administrators

Pay Grade: 02

Minimum Salary: $

Duty Days: 230 days per year

This position is grant-funded and continuation is dependent upon satisfactory performance availability of grant funds and program needs.

Primary Purpose:

Provides instruction to NTAEL students. Plans implements documents and evaluates instructional practices procedures and materials. Provides direct supervision of academic assistants when assigned. Monitors student outcomes and adjusts instruction to meet program and student goals.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification

  • Bachelors degree required; degree in education or a content-related field is preferred
  • Valid TESOL or Texas teaching certification preferred

Experience

  • Previous teaching and adult education experience preferred but not required

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in handling confidential information
  • Excellent organizational skills communication and interpersonal skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instruction

  • Provides instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) Adult Basic Education (ABE) or Adult Secondary Education (ASE) or other AEL services as assigned.
  • Applies research-based instructional practices that incorporate the use of computers and other technologies.
  • Is knowledgeable of reading writing and/or math instructional strategies.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies and tools appropriate to the needs of the student.
  • Uses lesson plans that integrate instruction across content areas.
  • Provides continuous feedback and adjusts instruction to maximize student learning.
  • Works with colleagues to develop and evaluate curriculum and materials.
  • Integrates work- family- and community-related activities into instruction.
  • Administers and interprets appropriate placement and diagnostic tests.
  • Applies adult education principles and methods in the classroom.
  • Plans learning experiences that are interactive and relevant to the specific workplace environment.
  • Contextualizes and develops workplace education curriculum and lesson plans that facilitate transference from the classroom to the job based on the workforce goals and expected training outcomes.
  • Integrates career exploration workforce preparation activities and other workplace skills development throughout the course.
  • Plans instructional support activities carried out by assistants as appropriate.
  • Evaluates the achievement of students with whom assistants are working.

Assesses and Monitors Learning

  • Uses formal and informal assessment data to monitor and document student progress.
  • Maintains student ITEC plans to help students achieve goals reach required program Measurable Skills Gains (MSGs) and promotes other program service options as appropriate.
  • Collects and manages accurate data for program improvement and accountability.
  • Participates in the retention and follow-up of students.

Classroom Management

  • Maintains knowledge of program regulations policy and procedures.
  • Maintains student records.
  • Supervises and monitors assistants when assigned.
  • Models and ensures professionalism and respect in the classroom.
  • Coordinates any student or staff corrective actions with appropriate supervisory staff

Community

  • Makes referrals to community agencies or postsecondary institutions as appropriate.
  • Advocates adult education at the local and state level and explains the impact of under-education on employment and society.
  • Assesses adult education needs and promotes AEL program in the community.
  • Promotes use of community resources and participates in activities of other community agencies as appropriate.
  • Assists in recruiting students and matching them with appropriate program services.

Professional Development

  • Participates in required paid professional development activities.
  • Uses technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Assesses personal strengths and weaknesses as a basis for developing a professional development plan

Other Related Duties:

  • Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Participates in professional development faculty/department meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools and Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise; occasional district-wide and statewide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
