Control Systems Engineer Summer 2026 Internship

Clean Harbors in Deer Park TX is looking for an intern (Control Systems Engineer) to join their Facility Support Group during Summer 2026.

This position assigned has responsibilities for support of the control systems (DCS PLC SIS etc.). The main responsibility is to deliver maintain and upgrade the control systems that meet productions requirements perform as necessary to achieve functionality and safety obligations and maximize system capability. This includes the leadership of the migration and lifecycle system process maintenance recommendation and oversight of installed base equipment co-ordination of concepts with production.

Responsibilities

• Ensure Health and Safety is the number one priority by following all company policies and procedures.
• Work within Operational Technology (OT) environments and alongside industrial equipment such as rotating machinery instrumentation and electrical systems.
• Assist in designing maintaining and troubleshooting plant control networks (PCN) to ensure secure and reliable connectivity for DCS PLC SIS and other automation systems.
• Support network lifecycle activities including upgrades patching and obsolescence planning for OT network infrastructure.
• Participate in network health checks diagnostics and performance monitoring to maintain system integrity.
• Collaborate with Reliability and Automation teams to:
  • Improve network reliability and uptime.
  • Optimize network architecture for cost efficiency and scalability.
  • Implement cybersecurity best practices for OT environments.
• Assist in incident investigations related to network failures and contribute to corrective actions.
• Help maintain network documentation including topology diagrams IP addressing schemes firewall rules and switch configurations.
• Support capital projects by reviewing network requirements and ensuring compliance with corporate standards.
• Learn and apply industrial communication protocols (e.g. Ethernet/IP Modbus TCP OPC UA) and network segmentation principles.
• Provide technical assistance for remote access solutions and secure vendor connectivity.

Education

• Undergraduate student pursuing a bachelors degree in Computer Engineering Electrical Engineering Electronics Engineering Network Engineering or related field (sophomore year or higher preferred).

Experience

• Entry-level position: prior exposure to networking concepts or industrial automation is a plus.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Basic understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP VLANs routing switching).
• Familiarity with firewalls VPNs and cybersecurity principles is desirable.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with Visio or network diagram tools is a plus.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States (no sponsorship provided).
