POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Principal or designee the High School Physical Education Teacher with Driver Education Certification is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in physical education and driver education. The teacher fosters physical fitness healthy lifestyle choices and safe driving practices while creating a safe inclusive and engaging learning environment for students.

This role contributes to student success academically socially and physically by promoting lifelong wellness responsible driving habits and adherence to School Board policies and applicable federal and state laws.

The purpose of this position is to build a pool of certified candidates in a high-demand field in LCS who can:

  • Deliver standards-based physical education and driver education instruction.
  • Promote student health wellness and safety.
  • Maintain a safe supportive and inclusive classroom and activity environment.
  • Prepare students to be responsible physically active and law-abiding citizens.
  • Support the divisions mission to serve every child every day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate physical education and driver education lessons aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Teach health fitness team sports individual physical skills and principles of safe driving.
  • Assess student performance through formative and summative assessments; use results to adjust instruction.
  • Foster student understanding of safety rules proper exercise techniques and responsible driving habits.
  • Supervise students during physical activities fitness assessments and behind-the-wheel or classroom-based driver education instruction.
  • Maintain accurate student records for physical education and driver education including attendance grades and safety compliance.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to integrate wellness and safety programs across the school.
  • Communicate effectively with students families and staff regarding performance expectations and safety practices.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain certification and enhance instructional practices.
  • Ensure compliance with school policies local and state driver education regulations and health and safety standards.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with Physical Education endorsement.
  • Must hold or be eligible for Virginia Driver Education Instructor Certification.
  • Experience teaching high school-aged students is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physical education curriculum health standards and driver education best practices.
  • Strong communication collaboration and organizational skills.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and effective instructional strategies for high school students.
  • Knowledge of physical education fitness principles health education and driver education standards.
  • Ability to plan implement and evaluate engaging lessons that promote lifelong wellness and safe driving practices.

  • Ability to manage classrooms gymnasiums athletic fields and vehicles safely and effectively.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
  • Supervises students during classroom physical activity and driver education instruction.
  • Provides direction and guidance to instructional assistants volunteers or student teachers as assigned.
  • Monitors student adherence to safety rules and traffic regulations during driver education.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Reliable transportation is necessary
  • Daily travel between schools LCS buildings and local areas may be required for professional development
  • Supervision of driving activities requires local travel to and from designated practice routes.
  • Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg is required
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work may involve collaborative support across academic programs student services and operational functions and requires frequent standing sitting walking light lifting (up to 10 pounds) vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing reviewing and analyzing written or electronic data. While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to frequently stand sit walk talk or hear; use hands to finger handle type or feel; and stoop kneel or crouch.
