DescriptionThe Coding Educator and Resource Specialist is responsible for development coordination and delivery of coding educational activities for the overall improvement of quality and completeness of Hospital coding and CDI coding and for providing the skill development needed for career path for coding. Supports Coding & CDI and Quality physician leaders at facility and system level. Collaborates with Coding & CDI Directors on assessing educational needs based on audit findings. Assists coding audit department team members with assigned responsibilities as needed.
ResponsibilitiesCoding Education Audit and Compliance:
- Identifies gaps in coding knowledge through assessment of results from coding audits coding denials and third-party analysis and prepares and delivers educational material to coding and CDI teams.
- Ensures coding and CDI teams are kept abreast of changes to coding regulations. Reviews releases of Coding Guidelines Coding Clinics Annual code releases and prepares monthly educational sessions for coding and CDI teams.
- Serves as a certified trainer for Epic HIM as it relates to coding and CDI.
- Provides on-boarding training to new Coding team members.
- Develops maintains and delivers structured curriculum to provide skills that create a pathway for coders career path.
- Performs complex coding quality audits in coordination with quality department leadership.
- Collaborates with Coding and CDI directors on identification of education needs. Provides feedback on identified coding trends.
- Works in a collaborative manner with coders CDI Specialists consultants and management staff.
Performance Improvement and Quality:
- Supports Medical Director of Coding & CDI and Chief Quality Officer at system level including Coding education efforts for the medical staff at each individual facility.
- Serves as subject matter expert and as a resource to coding and CDI leaders for complex coding issues.
- Maintains appropriate controls to ensure compliance with Federal/State regulations and organizational policies to include HIPAA Privacy Safe Environment
- Promotes the quality and efficiency of his/her own performance by remaining current with the latest trends in field of expertise through participation in job-related seminars and workshops attendance at professional conferences and affiliations with national and state professional organizations
- Produces requested or routine reports and provides appropriate feedback to physicians administration managers a timely manner. Maintains an organized work environment.
- Participation and management of special Coding projects as assigned.
QualificationsExperience: 5 years acute inpatient coding
Education: Associates degree in HIM
Licensure/Certification: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and RHIT or RHIA
