TheDepartment of Parks & Recreation (DPR) Division of Urban Forestry is seeking a Botanical Garden Supervisor forWahiawa Botanical Garden! Under the general supervision of the Park Grounds Improvement Supervisor II this position oversees the maintenance and equipment operations of the botanical garden.

What You Will Do
  • Plan assign and supervise all work programs throughout Wahiawa Botanical Garden.
  • Coordinate projects personnel materials and equipment; administer all grounds operations; direct planting activities; oversee inventories for equipment tools and supplies.
  • Provide support to interpretive staff for public programs and provide coordination with external agencies for normal activities and emergency response.
  • Assist in preparation of goals and objectives policies and procedures and operational budget.
  • Prepare required reports.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Special Work Requirements
  • Work schedule is Monday - Friday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.
  • Exposure to horticultural chemicals.
  • Working on steep grades rocky uneven slopes low precipices and in water.
  • Required to work after hours weekends and holidays for special projects events and emergency response.
  • May serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants including the propagation of a wide variety of plants in a botanical garden arboretum nursery or comparable facilitywhich must have included one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Applicable Skills Needed
Knowledge of:

  • principles and practices of supervision
  • cultivation and propagation of a variety of rare tropical plants to include: identification habitat growing conditions and characteristics; soil characteristics and preparation of planting media; insects pests and diseases of plants and effective methods of combating them; effective use of fertilizers; operation and maintenance of gardening tools/equipment
  • safety procedures and practices
Ability to:
  • plan and make work assignments
  • direct inspect and review the work of others
  • train others in the propagation and cultivation of plants
  • keep accurate records
  • deal effectively with the public
LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid Hawaii State drivers license (Type 3 and 2R as applicable); certification in the appropriate category as a Commercial Applicator of Restricted Pesticides as required.

Current Vacancy Requirements
Prior to appointment:
  1. Valid drivers license (Type 3/automobile).
  2. Valid Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test and Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) certificates.
Prior to completion of probation:
  1. Certification for Commercial Applicators of Restricted Pesticides (Ornamental).
  2. First Aid/CPR/AED certificates.

NOTE:The above certificates and licenses must be obtained by the time indicated and maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.
