Job Summary
The Cathodic Protection Technician is responsible for maintaining inspecting and testing cathodic protection systems to ensure optimal performance prevent equipment failures and extend system life. This role supports mission readiness by ensuring all corrosion control systems operate safely and efficiently in compliance with applicable standard.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance inspections and testing of cathodic protection systems in accordance with UFC.
- Diagnose test and repair rectifier components and related equipment.
- Conduct field tests including interrupted structure-to-electrolyte potentials current requirements continuity shorted casing and soil resistivity testing; evaluate and interpret results.
- Identify and mitigate stray current interference affecting underground pipelines.
- Perform and interpret current measurements voltage (IR) free readings and polarization tests.
- Record analyze and maintain cathodic protection data including test results and trend plots.
- Assess induced AC voltages on pipelines and recommend appropriate mitigation techniques.
- Understand and apply corrosion coupon testing methods.
- Ensure compliance with jurisdictional codes and standards related to cathodic protection.
- Maintain adherence to all safety standards and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support mission objectives.
Basic Qualifications
BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
- Knowledge in algebra geometry and electrochemistry.
- Understanding corrosion theory polarization and electrochemical behavior.
- Working knowledge of basic electrical laws circuits and cathodic protection systems (sacrificial and impressed current).
- Proficient in testing methodologies including voltmeters ammeters ohmmeters reference electrodes isolation tests and soil resistivity measurements.
- Thorough understanding of NEC NESC NFPA and OSHA standards.
- Skilled in troubleshooting maintaining and repairing electrical systems and components.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safe electrical work practices.
- Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
- Physically capable of performing field work involving climbing bending and prolonged standing or walking.
- Able to read and interpret technical drawings specifications work orders and manuals.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with NAVFAC Maximo or similar CMMS preferred.
- Fluent in English (reading writing and speaking).
- Must possess a valid drivers license and meet medical dental drug screening and background requirements for deployment.
- Ability to meet medical dental drug screening and background check requirements for deployment.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS: SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS OR TRAINING
- Certification by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) or the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) is required.
EDUCATION:
- Required: High School diploma Technical or Vocational training in Electrical field.
- Preferred: Associate of bachelors degree in electrical or mechanical engineering.
EXPERIENCE:
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years field experience in cathodic protection system work.
