General Responsibilities

This position is responsible for a variety of highly skilled painting tasks; to include serving as a crew leader and assisting with the maintenance repair shops in Facilities Management. Also responsible for supervising the work of level I and Level II paint shop employees.

Education and Experience

Requires a high school diploma supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship maintenance painting and glazing training and considerable progressively more responsible experience in the painting and glazing trades some of which will have been at the journey level or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge skill and ability.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees and participates in the work of a small group of employees engaged in painting a variety of surfaces on the interior and exterior of buildings such as walls ceilings doors windows baseboards handrails flag poles etc.
  • Lays out and paints lines on courts playgrounds athletic fields and parking lots.
  • Uses stencils to paint signs on blacktop and curbs; scrapes sands putties caulks sandblasts and otherwise prepares surfaces for painting.
  • Applies stain and primer varnish and paint with brush roller or spray gun; mixes and matches paints varnishes lacquers and enamels.
  • Removes damaged wooden window panes cleans frames and surfaces selects appropriate glass cuts glass to size and uses putty or other appropriate glazing compound to mount and fix glass in place for windows doors display cases fire alarms etc.
  • Uses ladders scaffolding boatswains chairs and bucket truck; protects surrounding areas or objects by taping or covering; moves furniture and other objects and takes down and replaces blinds and electrical hardware to facilitate work; ensures proper maintenance of brushes rollers and other painting equipment including minor repair of spray equipment; ensures safety of the work area.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment; drives a vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicles supplied with tools and materials.
  • Orders and procures equipment and materials from vendors and supply houses; performs operator maintenance on vehicles and keeps it in orderly condition; keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished by crew and materials used.
  • May be assigned to secure the school building at end of shift. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
