Job Summary

Job Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham ( UAB ) is searching for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy beginning August 2026. The teaching load is five courses per year over two semesters (3/2). The successful applicant must have a PhD in philosophy (or other relevant field) by August 2026 and will preferably have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching. Areas of specialization ( AOS ) should include applied ethics broadly construed; areas of competence ( AOC ) are open. The new hire will be expected to mainly teach courses in applied ethics (especially bioethics and ethics of AI) at the undergraduate and graduate levels supporting a graduate certificate in Ethical Dimensions of AI and a planned Masters degree in Bioethics. Required application materials: Cover Letter (indicating how the candidates qualifications and experience prepare them for this position) Curriculum Vitae Research Statement (approximately 2 pages explaining current and future research plans) Writing Sample (a research paper ideally in applied ethics) Statement of Teaching Philosophy (approximately 2 pages) Sample Syllabi (ideally in ethics of AI and/or bioethics) Summary of Student Teaching Evaluations (qualitative and quantitative data) 3-5 letters of reference First round interviews of selected applicants will take place via Zoom and finalists will be invited for on-campus interviews. The Department of Philosophy at UAB supports an undergraduate major and also serves the core curriculum. With over 22000 students and 2500 full-time faculty members UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in Alabama. PhD in philosophy (or other related field).
