The Instructional Designer works as part of the Center for Online Learning to create design and maintain online and blended courses. Responsibilities include working with faculty to design high quality online courses as well as plan and facilitate faculty training in online pedagogy and instructional uses of technologies. This position reports to the Associate Provost for Adult Learning supporting the universitys growing online and blended education programs.
Essential Functions
- Design online courses that meet best practice standards by providing instructional guidance and consultation to faculty subject matter experts (SMEs)
- Serve as project manager for online course development projects for new revised and updated courses and ensure adherence to deadlines and instructional design principles and the universitys standards
- Collaborate with faculty to create student-centered learning activities and assessments that align with university and program
- Coordinate with Digital Learning Support Manager to design multimedia and interactive course components such as videos podcast webcasts interactive learning modules etc.
- Coordinate with the instructional development team to produce the course in the learning management system
- Assist with review and maintenance of online and blended courses
- Develop documentation and other instructional materials supporting instructional strategies and technological tools to enhance their courses
- Develop and conduct faculty trainings and resources for best practices in teaching with technology
- Assist and support faculty in the development and design of appropriate teaching and learning strategies utilizing the latest instructional technology and design theories
- Advise on learning management system (LMS) usability testing and tool integration
- Research test and recommend emerging technologies for instructional uses
- Develop and select interactive course materials and learning objects that support online pedagogy
- Maintain a high degree of knowledge in existing and emerging learning methods utilizing instructional design theories and innovations in hardware software artificial intelligence and internet technologies
- Support the Digital Learning Support Manager and student employees in their customer service efforts providing guidance and completing support tickets as needed.
- Serve on university committees as needed
- Serve as course reviewer as part of the quality assurance process

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Masters degree in Instructional Design Curriculum and Instruction or related field
- 2 or more years of online teaching experience
- 2 or more years of experience providing instructional design consulting services to faculty and subject matter experts (SMEs) in a Higher Education environment
- Experience working with learning management system (Moodle Blackboard Canvas)
- Thorough knowledge of online/hybrid course and program development process
- Experience in planning and facilitating training workshops and developing training resources
- Experience communicating and working effectively with diverse faculty and staff
- Knowledge of adult learning theories constructivism facilitation and learner-centered activities
- Knowledge of instructional design principles online course pedagogy and inclusive/accessible course design.
- Demonstrated ability to develop innovative and successful online and hybrid courses
- Ability to lead and manage multiple projects
- Comfortable using a variety of multimedia tools to design interactive learning experiences
- Ability to use virtual meeting platforms effectively (Zoom Microsoft Teams etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently
- Exceptionally strong attention to detail
- Ability to be creative flexible and innovative in course design
- Have a positive energetic outlook with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Thorough knowledge of current adult and distance pedagogical theory and familiarity with university-level curriculum development and instructional methods
- Experience in developing and conducting training sessions both face-to-face and virtual
- Thorough knowledge of current technology tools for online and hybrid education
Environmental Conditions:
- Indoors in a normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise dust fumes vibrations and temperature changes at least eighty percent (80%) of the time.
- Frequent computer use at a workstation up to eight hours per day.
- Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
- Drive personal or University vehicles to appointments.
- Public contact position requiring professional apparel personal hygiene and grooming.
Physical Demands:
- This position typically functions indoors in an office environment with light to moderate noise associated with business office equipment. The position may involve travel for meetings and events.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to: remain in a stationary position 90 % of the time be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets/office machinery etc. operate a computer and keyboard and other office productivity machinery such as calculators/copy machines/printers. The employee is occasionally required to position self to reach items on the floor and in high cabinetry.
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Employee must be able to communicate with others to exchange information including both over the telephone and in-person communication with callers and community members and be able to read a computer screen and paper documents.
