Technical Lead - Structural Integrity (Methods and Standards)

The Engineering & Technology Methods Team has an opportunity for an experienced engineer to become the Technical Lead for Structural Integrity. We are looking for someone who is passionate about eliminating waste and seizing our opportunities. The role will include developing new holistic structural integrity policies to cover new scope (eg assurance of functional components assurance of new manufacturing technologies etc) and to maintain the existing structural integrity policies methods and guidance working with local specialists and engineers within the local and wider team.

In particular the role will look to develop policy and methods that improve efficiency pivot towards a more data driven digital approach and ensure compatibility with new products processes and applications. This work feeds into a holistic coherent approach to the lifing of Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) components and challenges the status-quo. This includes the whole SI scope from concept design through to design code adherence analysis (including Defect Tolerance Assessments (DTAs) manufacturing and engineering controls quality assurance ageing management and non-destructive evaluation (manufacturing and in-service). It supports all current and future programmes and covers the whole product lifecycle.

In addition the Technical Lead for Structural Integrity will provide support to the relevant teams in the implementation of structural integrity guidance through pilot studies providing responses to queries and initiating clarification and modification to existing guidance material as required.

You will be joining a cross functional group of local specialists principal senior and established engineers who develop the strategic policies and methods across multiple commodities and functions. What you will be doing:

  • To develop the submarines technical authority structural integrity policy methods and guidance material for the NSRP with a particular interest in structural integrity. This will involve additional technical basis documents and guidance material.
  • To develop structural integrity training material that can be given to all designers working on NSRP mechanical components.
  • To liaise with relevant design engineers specialists and Chief Engineers in order to ensure consistent approaches that can be practically implemented on current class NSRPs and new designs.
  • To actively participate in improvement programmes.
  • To work with members of the Methods and Standards team to ensure consistency of guidance material and standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified to degree level in a mechanical or materials engineering discipline.
  • An experienced engineer ideally at senior or principal engineer level
  • A track record of communicating solutions to complex problems clearly and good influencing skills
  • A good understanding of structural integrity justifications produced for high reliability components
  • A more detailed understanding of the following disciplines and their role in structural integrity would be beneficial:
    • ASME Section III
    • Fracture mechanics
    • NDE
    • NSRP component manufacturing processes including forging and welding
    • Quality Assurance
    • Materials
    • Age-related Degradation Mechanisms

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines an individual must hold a Security Check clearance. We will support the application for Security Clearance if you dont already have it.
