ATTENTION ALL ALASKA RESIDENTS!



Join the Northern Region Maintenance & Operations team as the Maintenance & Traffic Control Associate and play a vital role in keeping Alaskas roadways safe and this position you will provide engineering and field oversight for complex maintenance contracts while supporting traffic control planning work zone safety and on-the-ground operations that directly impact the traveling public across the region.


What you will be doing:

In this role you will provide engineering field and traffic control support to Northern Region Maintenance & Operations helping ensure safe compliant and efficient delivery of maintenance contracts and roadway operations.

  • Develop review and implement Traffic Control Plan (TCP) typicals and Temporary Traffic Control Plans (TTCPs) for maintenance projects to ensure the safe and efficient movement of the traveling public.

  • Provide traffic engineering oversight in the field by monitoring department traffic control setups ensuring compliance with MUTCD and Alaska Traffic Manual standards issuing corrective actions and documenting observations.

  • Coordinate lane closures detours work-zone staging and temporary traffic devices with superintendents foremen contractors and maintenance crews to ensure public and worker safety.

  • Conduct traffic-related inspectionsincluding signage barricades flagging operations pilot cars temporary signals and new traffic control equipmentwhile identifying safety risks and recommending improvements.

  • Support contract development and administration by assisting with plan preparation cost estimates technical specifications field investigations and contractor coordination for M&O projects.

  • Assist with emergency response field documentation asset inspections and data collection to support operational decision-making and potential FHWA or FEMA reimbursement.

  • Work to establish and manage Professional Service Agreements in support of Traffic Control and other Maintenance & Operations needs.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is located in Fairbanks Alaska


This position is based in the Northern Region Maintenance & Operations Engineering office. The role combines office-based engineering and contract work with regular field visits to project and maintenance sites across the region.


You will work closely with district superintendents foremen contractors and field crews providing technical support and oversight to projects throughout Interior and Arctic Alaska. Field work may include travel by vehicle small plane boat or ATV depending on project location and seasonal conditions.

This position requires:

The incumbent may need to obtain one or more of the following certifications based on assigned duties. These certifications are not required at the time of hire and would be offered once the chosen applicant has been onboarded:

  • ATSSA Traffic Control Technician
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor
  • Valid Drivers license.

Qualifications

Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering land surveying or architecture of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering architecture land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.
