POSITION Volunteer Board or Commission Member (Appointed) STATUS Volunteer / Appointed (non-paid unless otherwise specified)
REPORTS TO Board of Commissions Chair; supported by assigned City Staff Liaison
JOB SUMMARY A Board/Commission Member serves the community by providing informed oversight guidance and decision-making on matters within the board/commissions legal authority. Members review materials attend meetings ask thoughtful questions uphold ethical standards and work collaboratively to support transparent fair and effective public service.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Attend and actively participate in scheduled meetings and required training Review materials in advance and engage in informed discussion and decision-making Exercise independent judgment consistent with applicable laws ordinances and City policy Maintain professionalism and respect in public deliberations Consider resident input and broader community impact when making decisions OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve on subcommittees as appointed.
- Attend occasional trainings work sessions site visits or special meetings as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in compliance with law and City policy.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Community public service leadership or relevant professional experience preferred but not required.
- Additional eligibility requirements may apply by statute or ordinance (e.g. residency political affiliation licensure or subject-matter expertise).
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to participate effectively in public meetings and communicate respectfully with diverse audiences.
- Ability to read and interpret agendas staff reports applications plans and related documents in printed or digital format.
- Ability to think critically evaluate information and make decisions consistent with applicable laws and policies.
WORKING CONDITIONS Meetings are held in City facilities and/or virtually and are primarily sedentary. Meetings may occur in the evening and occasional site visits or community events may be required.
POST OFFER TESTING REQUIREMENTS Not Applicable (Volunteer/Appointed Position). No post-offer testing is required unless specifically mandated by applicable law or City policy for a particular board/commission.
