Summer English & Composition Instructor Upward Bound (Hourly)

Job Description Summary:

The Summer English Instructor is responsible for strengthening the reading writing and analytical skills of high school students (9th12th grade) from first-generation and low-income backgrounds. The goal is to close literacy gaps and introduce students to the rigors of college-level English ensuring they are prepared for the academic demands of the upcoming school year and future university coursework.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Design: Develop a 6-week Summer Bridge curriculum that focuses on critical reading formal composition and the writing process (drafting peer review and editing).

  • College Essay Coaching: Lead intensive workshops for rising seniors on the Common App Personal Statement and other college-specific supplemental essays.

  • Analytical Literacy: Select multicultural texts (poetry short stories or contemporary essays) that resonate with the student population to prompt deep discussion and analysis.

  • Academic Writing: Instruct students on the fundamentals of evidence-based argumentation research skills and proper MLA/APA citation formatting.

  • Active Learning: Implement engaging non-traditional activities such as Socratic seminars mock trials or creative writing portfolios to keep students motivated.

  • Assessment: Administer mandated Pre- and Post-Tests to measure student growth in reading and writing for federal grant reporting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors degree in English English Education Rhetoric/Composition or a related field.

  • Experience: 12 years of experience teaching or tutoring writing at the high school or early college level.

  • Mission Alignment: Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of socioeconomically disadvantaged students and the ability to motivate underrepresented youth.

  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide constructive encouraging feedback to students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid State Teaching Certification in Secondary English/Language Arts (ELA).

  • Masters degree in English or Education.

  • Experience with Writing Across the Curriculum or project-based literacy initiatives.

  • Prior experience with TRIO programs (Upward Bound Talent Search etc.).

37.50/Hour
