The University of Alabama Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine Department of Surgery is currently recruiting faculty candidates to be considered for a tenure track or non-tenure track faculty appointment in the Division of Surgical Oncology . This individual will be a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist with a clinic focus in the treatment of skin and soft tissue malignancies including melanoma and sarcoma. The Division of Surgical Oncology is committed to providing personalized comprehensive care for patients with a broad array of benign and malignant tumors. We work in collaboration with members from other divisions in the Department of Surgery along with the Department of Radiation Oncology Division of Hematology/Oncology the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery the Department of Genetics and the Department of Dermatology to provide high-quality innovative and comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer care. We also provide an environment that supports the education of health professionals and encourages advanced research to further medical science. Interested candidates should contribute to the tripartite mission of the institution including clinical research and education needs of the division. The surgeon would report to the Division Director of Surgical Oncology and the Department Chair. The Department of Surgery is comprised of over 150 faculty and over 400 fellows residents and staff and has 9 divisions including Surgical Oncology. The clinical programs in the department are world leaders in their field and are housed at the University Hospital which is the 3rd largest public hospital in the US. The Department has over 13 million dollars in research funding annually including 3 NIH training grants: an NIH / NCI T32 Surgical Oncology grant an NIH / NIDDK T35 grant and an NIH - NCI R25 oncology grant. The education program consists of 5 residencies and 11 fellowships. The University of Alabama at Birmingham one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System is the only four-year public university in the states largest metropolitan area. The University spans 100 blocks in the city center with over 250 buildings providing over 13 million feet of assignable space. For fiscal year 2021-2022 (most recent available) the Universitys economic impact on the Birmingham area exceeds $12.1 billion to the FY2022 UAB received over $715 million in NIH extramural grants and contracts. As of the fall of 2022 the University employed 26000 people had a faculty of 3176 (45% of whom are female) and had a student enrollment of just under 22000 at the undergraduate through doctoral levels.
