Function/Duties of Position
The Department of Pediatricsis seeking a dynamic individual to join our Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) team. The team consists of three board-certified Child Abuse Pediatricians and one Nurse Practitioner. The Nurse Practitioner staffs the consult service one weekend per month from Friday at 5:00 PM to Monday at 8:00 AM.
This role is aligned with the OHSU Dept of Pediatrics missions of clinical advocacy research and educational excellence.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Respond in a timely fashion to all pages from the OHSU Pediatric Emergency Department Trauma service inpatient services and clinics regarding concerns for child maltreatment.
- Respond in a timely fashion to all calls including from the transfer center and physician consult line requesting assistance/recommendations regarding child maltreatment concerns.
- Conduct SCAN consultations as appropriate on patients with concerns for child maltreatment admitted to DCH or the OHSU ED. Consultations shall include the following duties where indicated:
- Obtain a medical history from the parent or other caregiver
- Perform a physical examination on the patient
- Collect photo documentation when appropriate
- Provide recommendations for laboratory testing and imaging
- Review radiology images and laboratory test results in a timely manner
- Submit reports to Oregon and Washington DHS when indicated and as mandated by law
- Coordinate with the consulting and/or admitting team and social work including for discharge planning
- Provide timely updates to law enforcement and DHS workers
- Complete written documentation of SCAN consultation in Epic
- Sign out to incoming SCAN provider upon completion of call
- Document telephone consultations in Epic as appropriate
- Prepare and provide testimony in any legal proceedings related to SCAN consultations as required by subpoena
Education/Advocacy:
- Provide clinical education to fellows residents medical and APP students participating in pediatric rotations
Administrative Activities:
- Participation in faculty meetings at the division department and APP level
- Attending relevant conferences/committees as assigned by Division Head or SCAN Medical Director
Required Qualifications
Nurse Practitioner:
- Current Acute Care/Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner license for the State of Oregon
- Previous experience providing child abuse consultations and examinations
- Appropriate National board certification
- State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges
- DEA license
- Ability to manage a heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Proficiency in the use of computing hardware and software including personal computing equipment electronic medical record word processing and spreadsheet software
- Regular and consistent attendance at work
