TheDepartment of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS)has an outstanding opportunity for anInstructional Designer (Temporary)to join their team.

The UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) housed in the School of Public Health is seeking a full-time Instructional Designer to join a team of instructors staff and faculty providing professional continuing education courses throughout the Northwest Region. DEOHS is one of five departments in the School of Public Health and focuses on the prevention and intervention of environmental and occupational health injuries and illnesses through research teaching and service. The Instructional Designer will join a small team of instructors and staff dedicated to serving the educational needs of workers business leaders and occupational health and safety practitioners

The courses are offered through the Occupational Safety and Health Continuing Education Programs (OSHCE) held in Alaska Washington Oregon and Idaho Courses and events are in-person virtual and on-line serving about 3500 participants per year through 250 course addition OSHCE administers a health and safety train-the-trainer program with 1100 active trainers.

Position Summary

The Instructional Designer partners with subject matter experts instructors and program leaders to design develop and continuously improve high-quality learning experiences for OSHA-authorized training and professional development courses. This role applies evidence-based instructional design principles adult learning theory and accessibility standards to create engaging effective and production-ready learning materials across multiple modalities (in-person virtual blended and on demand).

The Instructional Designer plays a key role in creating new course content and updating the existing library of course content currently in use. This role will be instrumental in designing and implementing regulatory technical and safety-related content into learner-centered experiences that support compliance performance improvement and measurable learning outcomes.

Course Design & Implementation 60%

  • Design and develop OSHA-authorized training and professional development courses using established instructional design models (e.g. ADDIE SAM backward design).

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts including OSHA-authorized instructors safety professionals and faculty to clarify learning objectives scope content and ensure technical and regulatory accuracy.

  • Utilize best practices for designing and implementing clear engaging learner-centered instructional materials.

  • Create instructional materials including course outlines syllabi lesson plans slide decks for use in course instruction.

  • Design content for multiple delivery formats including in-person virtual instructor-led training blended learning and asynchronous online courses for a variety of modalities and technologies including Canvas Canva and PowerPoint.

  • Support OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Center requirements including course structure learning objectives contact hours and documentation.

  • Use learning technologies and authoring tools including LMS platforms PowerPoint Canvas Articulate AI and video tools to develop update and maintain course content.

  • Support course builds revisions and version control within the learning management system.

  • Ensure instructional materials meet accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG Section 508) and universal design for learning (UDL) principles.

  • Prepare materials to be production-ready requiring minimal revision prior to delivery audit or publication.

Evaluation & Continuous Improvement 20%

  • Design learner assessments and evaluation tools aligned with course objectives.

  • Analyze course feedback and evaluation data to recommend and implement improvements.

  • Support continuous improvement efforts by updating content based on learner needs regulatory changes or program goals.

Collaboration & Project Management 20%

  • Manage multiple instructional design projects simultaneously meeting deadlines and quality expectations.

  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders regarding timelines deliverables and scope.

  • Participate in cross-functional teams to support program development and strategic initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in instructional design education instructional technology adult education or a related field.

  • Three years of experience designing and developing adult learning programs preferably for professional technical or regulatory audiences.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license/certification/registration.

Additional Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of instructional design principles adult learning theory and competency-based education.

  • Experience working with subject matter experts in safety health compliance or technical disciplines.

  • Proficiency with instructional development tools including PowerPoint LMS platforms document and multimedia tools.

  • Excellent written visual and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license certification and/or registration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in instructional design education learning sciences public health occupational safety and health or a related field.

  • Experience supporting OSHA-authorized training continuing education or professional certification programs.

  • Familiarity with OSHA standards regulatory training requirements or workforce development programs.

  • Experience applying evaluation models (e.g. Kirkpatrick) to assess training effectiveness.

  • Experience designing accessible and inclusive learning experiences for diverse adult learners.

Compensation Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$78000.00 annual
