Department: Player Development
Reports to: Director Player Development
Classification: Full-time/Non-Exempt (TEMP)
Summary/Objective:
The Houston Astros Player Development department is looking for an Apprentice to join their team for the 2026 season. You will be immersed in a collaborative environment where you will be given the opportunity to grow and addition to attending to your core responsibilities we hope you will take initiative to innovate and push us in new directions. You will also have an opportunity to gain exposure to other areas of the department throughout the year and assist in additional Baseball Operations projects.
Anticipated start date of apprenticeship is May 2026.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Serve as a dedicated analytics resource for Player Development to support the departments of hitting pitching and development.
- Conduct research aimed at advancing the organizations understanding of baseball performance trends and strategic opportunities.
- Assist in the development and monitoring of the player plan process throughout the system.
- Familiarize yourself with our internal systems and identify research areas to enhance Player Development practices.
- Implement execute and monitor the daily use of wearable technology creating reports and tools to share findings with coaches and staff.
- Work on assigned and independent projects utilizing our internal systems and organizational resources.
- Assist with player programming at the Houston Astros and our affiliates.
- Analyze objective and subjective streams of information to facilitate player development and acquisition.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education or Experience and/or Skills:
- Pursuing a bachelors degree currently enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution or recent graduate.
- Enthusiastic about baseball and dedicated to people development.
- Possesses some knowledge of baseball advanced statistics and current industry research/trends.
- Interested in gaining exposure to various areas of Player Development and exploring process improvements.
- Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
- Familiarity with coding languages R and Python is a plus.
- Demonstrated work ethic passion for baseball and strong baseball knowledge including familiarity with current baseball research and analysis.
- Strong ability to visualize data sets.
- Ability to multi-task stay organized and be flexible in a fast-paced environment.
- Able to work effectively alone or in teams of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences promoting a culture of inclusion.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word Excel PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Ability to work evenings weekends holidays and other variable hours.
Work Environment
This job operates in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers and filing cabinets. The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud within the stadium environment.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is a largely sedentary role; however some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Ability to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings weekends and holidays.
Travel
Occasional travel may be expected in this role.
