REPORTS TO City Engineer and Engineering Project Managers
DATE Summer 2026
Compensation: $16.00 per hour up to 40 hours per week. Number of Positions: Two (2) Summer Internships.
JOB SUMMARY The Engineering Intern provides technical and administrative support to the Engineering Division of Elkhart Public Works & Utilities. The intern assists with construction inspection field data collection surveying activities and office-based engineering support functions. This position offers practical hands-on experience in municipal engineering operations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with construction inspection of public works and utility projects. Perform field checks and gather engineering-related data. Conduct topographical surveying and support GPS-based field work. Assist with roadway traffic water and sewer system documentation and review. Scan organize and record engineering plans and related documents. Perform data entry and assist in the preparation of engineering reports. Support GIS mapping updates and engineering documentation. Perform related field and office duties as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with special engineering projects as assigned. Support department staff with administrative or technical tasks as needed. Perform other duties as directed to support the goals of Public Works & Utilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a bachelors degree in civil engineering with at least one year of undergraduate study completed. Candidates pursuing degrees in Environmental Engineering Construction Management or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will also be considered. A valid drivers license is required.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES Basic coursework or experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: Surveying principles and practices Roadway and traffic design Water and sewer system design Microsoft Office applications ESRI ArcGIS GPS technology AutoCAD
Ability to: Read and interpret engineering plans and specifications Collect and record accurate field data Work effectively in a team environment Perform technical tasks with attention to accuracy
PHYSICAL MENTAL AND VISUAL SKILLS Ability to work outdoors for extended periods. Ability to walk uneven terrain and construction sites. Ability to lift and carry light to moderate equipment. Ability to operate a vehicle safely. Visual acuity sufficient to review engineering drawings and digital data.
WORKING CONDITIONS Combination of office and outdoor field work. Exposure to varying weather conditions during field inspections and surveying activities. Occasional exposure to construction site environments.
POST OFFER TESTING REQUIREMENTS The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment). Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
