We are recruiting on behalf of our client a well-established organisation based in Wales UK seeking an experienced HGV Mechanic to join their in-house fleet maintenance team.
This is a hands-on role focused on maintaining and repairing a fleet of diesel HGVs and trailers to ensure maximum vehicle uptime operational reliability and full compliance with UK transport legislation. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring fleet roadworthiness and adherence to statutory standards.
The Role
You will be responsible for the inspection maintenance diagnosis and repair of heavy goods vehicles to ensure fleet safety reliability and compliance with UK road transport regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out routine servicing preventative maintenance and repairs on HGVs and trailers
Diagnose and rectify mechanical electrical and hydraulic faults
Perform engine diagnostics using manufacturer diagnostic systems
Prepare vehicles and trailers for MOT inspections and Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMI)
Attend roadside breakdowns and carry out emergency repairs when required
Rectify defects identified through safety inspections and driver defect reports
Ensure all work complies with DVSA standards and company procedures
Accurately complete job cards service records and compliance documentation
Maintain a clean safe and organised workshop environment
Adhere strictly to Health & Safety regulations
Communicate effectively with workshop supervisors and management
Skills & Experience Required
Proven experience working as an HGV Mechanic within a fleet or commercial vehicle environment
Strong knowledge of diesel engines ideally including Scania or Mercedes vehicles
Practical experience with:
Air braking systems
Suspension and steering systems
Electrical diagnostics
Hydraulic systems
Solid understanding of fleet compliance roadworthiness standards and UK transport regulations
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills with a focus on reliability and uptime
Qualifications & Licences
NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (preferred)
Full UK driving licence (HGV Class 1 or 2 advantageous but not essential)
Manufacturer training (e.g. Scania) is beneficial but not required
English Language Requirement (Mandatory)
All applicants must either already hold or be willing to obtain a UKVI IELTS certificate achieving a minimum score of 5.5 in each section (Listening Reading Writing and Speaking).
