Data Science Intern/Co-op 4 months

Ottawa ON (Hybrid) Full-time

Position Summary

We are searching for a Data Science Intern/Co-op student for a future vacancy for 4 months on our Team in Ottawa ON. The Data Science intern/coop student will be involved in the data analytics and general data governance in support of innovation projects that contribute to naval platforms in-service support programs. As part of the Innovation Team the student will help deliver value to the operational team quickly in an agile and incremental way. More specifically the Data Science intern/coop student will work with business analysts and operational stakeholders to identify problems and find relevant data solutions. The type of solutions could range from implementing data pipelines building domain-specific data schemas building machine learning models implement dashboards that help with decision making while using modern development techniques and technologies.

Essential Functions

  • Support data initiatives such as dashboards required for the maintenance and engineering of complex assets;
  • Contribute to data governance initiative such as data landscape;
  • Develop ETL/ELT pipelines;
  • Develop data mappings and lineage;
  • Develop data quality rules;
  • Create AI models based on available data.

Minimum Requirements

Skills and Abilities:
Experience with business intelligence tools such as Power BI
Experience with data science techniques and toolsets such as Argo dbt Nifi Jupyter Notebook;
Experience with data modeling techniques and languages;
Experience with scripting technologies such as Python R;
Knowledge of agile software engineering methodologies;
Work on well-defined projects with minimal supervision;
Proven problem solving and analytic skills with a desire to learn;
Business acumen;
Capable of developing strong relationships across the business through excellent customer service; and
Excellent communication skills in the English language written and verbal.
Education:
3rd or 4th year undergraduate student in software engineering computer science or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with military (ideally Navy);
  • Experience with software engineering;
  • Experience with artificial intelligence techniques and toolsets.

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in mathematics physics or a related field.

Special Position Requirements

Occasional travels to the East or West Coast

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target is between Total Target Cash (TTC) 55000 67000 CAD Annual.

This reflects how companies in a similar industry and geographic region generally pay for similar jobs. This range helps the Company make pay decisions as one data point among many. Where a position falls within this range is also dependent on other factors including but not limited to the employees career path history competencies skills and performance as well as the companys annual salary budget the customers program requirements and the companys internal equity. Thales may offer additional benefits and other compensation depending on circumstances not related to an applicants status protected by local state or federal law.
