Position Summary

The Building and Grounds Technician performs skilled maintenance and repair work on machinery building systems and campus equipment to ensure safe reliable and efficient operations. Applies strong technical judgment and works independently to diagnose issues determine appropriate methods and procedures and complete assignments to a high standard of quality.

Work assignments are generally provided electronically and may include sketches diagrams or technical specifications. Operates under general supervision from the Facilities Manager Director of Campus Operations and/or Chief Financial & Operations Officer with autonomy in day-to-day task execution and problem-solving.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs facilities activities according to the scheduled calendar of school activities and scheduled preventative maintenance requirements for the school year and summer projects. Reviews the daily schedule for last-minute changes with the facilities manager and/or the school director.

  • Maintain facilities and grounds including cleaning landscaping snow removal and routine repairs. Coordinate changes with the facilities manager or school director.

  • Report specialized maintenance needs to the facilities manager.

  • Repair equipment and furniture as directed. Assist other departments with moving furniture and storing supplies.

  • Assist with pickups and deliveries as needed.

  • Assist with general interior repairs including patching sanding and painting walls windows floors ceilings doors and lockers.

  • Assist with exterior building repairs.

  • Help repair parking lots and sidewalks using asphalt cold patching or concrete as directed.

  • Maintain landscaping including planting trimming edging pruning fertilizing raking and watering.

  • Remove debris and snow and apply salt or equivalent for safety.

  • Assemble furniture and seating for various events (ex Choir chairs assemblies rehearsals collections fundraisers etc.).

  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and assist in troubleshooting mechanical equipment issues.

  • Monitor school grounds daily remove litter and manage waste disposal.

  • Notify the facilities manager of stock or equipment shortages.

  • Support event preparation. Work designated weekends as requested.

  • Support transportation custodial and security teams as needed.

  • Fulfill special facilities requests approved by the facilities manager typically communicated via the SchoolDude work order system.

  • Communicate effectively use technology as needed and foster a collaborative work environment with all school community members.

  • Remain current on new tools and tech through ongoing training.

  • Perform duties safely. Report hazards and unsafe practices immediately.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by school leadership.

Campus Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist with athletic field maintenance including layout striping event preparation and equipment setup at the Upper and Middle School campuses.

  • Operate grounds equipment on all campuses (snowblower salt-spreader shovel loaders cutters rollers trenchers) with prior approval.

  • Support the lunch program by setting up and clearing tables and managing trash at the Lower School

  • Assist with playground equipment repairs at the Lower School

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • 3 years of general building maintenance experience preferred.

  • Knowledge and /or experience with basic plumbing electrical building construction groundskeeping and preventative maintenance.

  • Valid Michigan drivers license required.

  • Ability to safely operate small power equipment (tools vacuum cleaners floor machines lawn mowers leaf blowers power washers weed whackers).

  • Willingness to take direction and follow through as directed.

  • Self-motivated and willing to step in and help out wherever necessary.

  • Ability to work successfully in the presence of children and ability to work with a diverse group of people at all levels of the organization.

  • Good computer skills required including email and calendars.

  • Effective verbal organizational troubleshooting and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks manage time effectively and communicate needs to School Leadership.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Moderate physical effort may be required when performing some maintenance tasks.

  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds.

  • Ability to climb ladders balance and stoop kneel crouch or crawl.

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions including heat cold and rain.

  • Must be able to work around children and in active school environments that may be noisy or crowded at times.

Work Schedule & Compensation

This is a full-time non-exempt position working 40 hours per week. Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Occasional overtime associated with early morning evening and weekend event support and snow management. The pay range for this position is $25.00 per hour minimum commensurate with experience.
