About the Role
Working closely with the Senior Engineering Manager for Products this role leads inspires and grows software engineering teams responsible for delivering and maintaining ABCs web and mobile products in the audio space. From the hugely popular Listen website and app through to triple Js Hottest 100 and Unearthed this position plays a key role in setting the direction for some of Australias most loved audio products.
The role combines people-first leadership with technical vision to ensure products are scalable high quality and audience-focused. It drives the adoption of modern development practices encourages collaboration across teams and empowers engineers to innovate and grow. This position is central to shaping how ABC builds evolves and maintains digital experiences for millions of Australians.
Key Accountabilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead and support technical teams in the analysis design and development of complex reusable components and functionality for a broad range of ABC digital properties.
- Set and communicate a long-term vision for mobile and web application development ensuring teams adopt industry best practices in areas such as design patterns architecture user interface building accessibility and performance.
- Foster collaborative working relationships within teams providing clear guidance mentoring and performance support while aligning goals to business priorities.
- Bring deep software engineering architecture and leadership expertise to the ABC Digital Product Technology team ensuring efficient development of web and mobile applications across devices.
- Encourage cross-team collaboration to develop shared components and functionality improving maintainability and reducing duplication of effort.
Strategy and Planning
- Participate actively in the senior management team providing insights recommendations and strategic input that shape the direction of the division and support broader organisational goals.
- Contribute to divisional strategic planning and resource reviews ensuring teams are positioned to deliver efficiently and sustainably.
- Partner with the executive team to understand budget positions and make informed adjustments to meet annual financial commitments.
Collaboration
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including vendors and consultants staying informed about industry trends and regulatory requirements.
- Foster a cross-functional collaborative environment working with product coaches product managers designers developers DevOps specialists testers and content experts.
- Contribute to improving development practices and standards to increase the quality scalability and sustainability of output.
Key Capabilities
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent practical experience skills and knowledge.
- Extensive experience with web and mobile application development at scale using modern frameworks tools and approaches including NodeJS React and mobile platforms. Experience with other languages and platforms is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge and experience with standard web technologies APIs (REST and GraphQL) and data formats such as XML and JSON.
- Proven experience selecting installing and maintaining development environments including version control build servers and test environments and implementing software development methodologies across teams.
- Strong expertise in accessibility performance optimisation and high-quality web-based user interfaces.
- Demonstrated experience leading and managing dispersed technical teams across multiple applications and geographies.
- Experience designing applications for high-scale environments with knowledge of cloud architecture principles and technologies such as Content Delivery Networks (CDNs).
