About the Role

This is an excellent opportunity to take on a hands-on engineering leadership role where you will manage mentor and grow the software engineering teams behind the ABCs iconic iview video streaming and on demand website mobile and large screen applications. Working alongside the Senior Engineering Manager for Products you will provide technical guidance shape development practices and ensure products meet audience needs across ABCs digital platforms.

In this role you will be accountable for architecture and design decisions drive adoption of best practice and support cross-team collaboration to improve innovation efficiency and maintainability. This position is ideal for an engineering leader with strong experience across web or mobile application development eager to deepen technical and leadership skills support innovation and influence product delivery for a digital product with high visibility and high usage.

Key Accountabilities

Technical Leadership

• Manage technical teams in the analysis design and development of complex reusable components and functionality for ABC digital properties across the web
• Provide leadership with awareness of industry best practices in mobile and web application development including design patterns user interface building architecture accessibility and performance
• Communicate best practices to development team members to ensure high-quality outcomes across projects
• Provide direction and guidance to staff by fostering collaborative working relationships managing performance setting goals aligned with business plans and engaging in effective communications
• Deliver superior software engineering architecture and leadership within the ABC Digital Product Technology team for mobile and web applications
• Coordinate and promote cross-team development of shared components and functionality to increase maintainability and reduce duplication
• Take accountability for technical documentation to ensure all development work is maintainable
• Drive high-quality product development within agreed timeframes and budgets

Strategy and Planning

• Actively participate as part of the senior management team providing recommendations contributing to divisional strategy and representing division interests
• Contribute to divisional strategic planning processes and resource reviews
• Work with the executive team to understand budget positions and make necessary adjustments to meet yearly targets

Collaboration

• Develop and maintain effective strategic relationships with external parties including major vendors and consultants staying informed of industry developments and regulatory environments
• Foster a cross-functional team approach collaborating with product coaches product managers designers developers dev ops testers and content experts
• Contribute to the development of best practices and standards to improve output quality

About you

• Relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent skills knowledge and experience
• Extensive experience with web and mobile application development at scale using modern tools frameworks and approaches including major technologies such as NodeJS React and mobile application development
• Knowledge of standard web technologies APIs (REST and GraphQL) and popular data formats such as XML and JSON as well as streaming and media delivery technologies.
• Experience selecting installing and maintaining development environments including version control build servers and test environments
• Experience implementing software development methodologies and processes within teams focused on audience-facing web and mobile applications
• Strong experience with accessibility and performance within web-based user interfaces
• Demonstrated experience leading and managing dispersed technical teams across multiple applications and locations
• Experience designing high-scale applications and cloud architecture including Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)
• Ability to collaborate effectively using well-developed interpersonal oral and written communication skills translating complex technical information to target audiences
• Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate at technical and executive levels
• Highly developed organisational skills with commitment to meeting deadlines and understanding project management principles application development methodologies and quality processes
