Hiring rate for this position is $17.50/hour.

This posting is collecting seasonal lifeguard applications for all aquatics locations within the City of Aurora.

This is classified as a Seasonal position with the selected candidates employment limited to six (6) consecutive months and up to 40 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leavein accordance withthe Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

The hiring season for this role is expected to begin on Monday March 23. 2026 and may run through Sunday September 13 2026.

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications throughout the year. As soon as we determine that we have a qualified pool of applicants this position may close quickly and without notice.

This job announcement is to collect applications from candidates for current and future Lifeguard positions. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified and qualifications match the positions needs.

Lifeguards perform routine tasks to maintain the safety and cleanliness of swimming pools

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing patron information
  • Enforcing pool rules

  • Performing daily pool maintenance

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge skills and abilities may be considered.

Education:

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of pool safety and emergency action plans.

Skills:

  • Skill in the life saving techniques and emergency response.

Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain a safe environment at work site.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Lifeguard training
  • Standard first aid and CPR-PR certification or equivalent program certification.
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification (Preferred)

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds; regular walking and standing; regular climbing bending kneeling and crouching; hand/foot/eye coordination to perform appropriate rescue skills; vision to read instructions; hearing and speech communication for communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to dust noise chemicals water and other conditions found in an aquatic environment.

Equipment Used:

  • Operates equipment related to aquatic facility operations.

This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle cell phone tools etc.) in the course of their employment.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16 April 10 July 2 and December 24.

Safety sensitive positions include Civil Service positions within Police and Fire Departments and positions where their job responsibilities have direct and substantial responsibility that would impact the health and safety of others.
