Job Summary

JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION
FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT
BENEFITS STATUS: FULL-TIME
SALARY GRADE: ADMIN I
(experience-based) local supplement


GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision oversees the activities of the mechanics in the operation repair and maintenance of the vehicles in the school transportation program. Supervises mechanics scheduling assignments and prioritizing to the Transportation Director.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Schedules and assigns work to be done to other employees in transportation.

  • Provides on-the-job instruction of repair and service practices for other employees.

  • Participates in the screening selection and discipline of transportation employees.

  • Tests and inspects completed work of other technicians to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

  • Maintains or oversees the maintenance of all or some portion of record-keeping and reporting necessary to the transportation programs.

  • Processes material and supply purchases.

  • Investigates and reports accidents in which school transportation equipment is involved.

  • Oversees the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles required inspection of buses and other school-owned vehicles.

  • Maintains any permits needed for the transportation for example UST permit.

  • Maintains and oversees the maintenance of needed Bsip information and state inspections

  • Complete monthly inspection reports and service reports.

  • Communicate with other stakeholders involved with transportation services including bus drivers administrators and vendors.

  • Work with other stakeholders while on the scene of a bus accident.

  • Processes material and supply purchases as well as needed warranty work


ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Director.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Considerable experience with vehicle operation maintenance and repair and some technical automotive mechanic training are preferred.

  • Must be School Bus Inspector Certified or have the ability to become certified within 12 months of employment.

  • Must have the appropriate NC Drivers License for the weight and type of vehicles operated and the appropriate endorsements as required by the Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles. (Minimum license is a CDL class B with the following endorsements: P-passenger and S-school bus).

  • Four years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair or two years of technical training in the automotive field.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Physical Requirements: Requires light to moderate physical work. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time. Some repairs and inspections are conducted on bus parking lots in various weather conditions.


Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional structural or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data people and things.


Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.


Language Ability:Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence reports handbooks forms manuals etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence reports time sheets and supply requisitions forms etc. using the prescribed format.


Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply common sense.


Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.


Numerical Aptitude:Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.


Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using a computer.


Manual Dexterity:Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office and audiovisual equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.


Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergencies.


Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk hear and write: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance.

  • Thorough knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines and other mechanical components of school buses and service vehicles.

  • Thorough knowledge of the tools and equipment used in vehicular repair shops.

  • Ability to diagnose the causes of improperly operating electrical and generating systems of automotive vehicles and to make necessary repairs.

  • Ability to comprehend and apply the North Carolina Inspection Law.

  • Ability to direct the work of mechanics.

  • Thorough knowledge of State Inspection Software (Bsip)

  • Ability to determine appropriate methods to repair improperly operating automotive equipment.

  • Skill to physically perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance and vehicle body repair.

  • Ability to read and comprehend technical materials and manuals.
