Job Summary

Overview

The Department of Animal Dairy and Veterinary Sciences (ADVS) at Utah State University invites applications for a Lecturer position with a primary emphasis on hands-on instruction for the Veterinary Technology Associate of Science degree program. This academic year appointment with a 95% teaching and 5% service role is based on USUs main campus in Logan Utah. The successful candidate will play a central role in delivering practical skills-based training designed to prepare students for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and for professional practice as credentialed veterinary technicians.

This lecturer position focuses on laboratory and clinical instruction across veterinary technical skills including companion animal care nursing techniques clinical laboratory procedures animal handling and large animal clinical activities. The lecturer will also oversee teaching laboratories and instructional clinical spaces and coordinate experiential learning activities with affiliated university facilities.

The program features an innovative hybrid structure with didactic coursework delivered asynchronously online and hands-on technical instruction conducted in person at multiple sites including USUs Logan and Blanding campuses.

The curriculum is designed as a stackable pathway. Students may complete a veterinary assistant certificate at partner institutions and articulate those credits into the A.S. program and graduates may continue into USUs B.S. degree in Veterinary Science. USU currently offers the only Veterinary Technology A.S. degree in Utah underscoring its leadership role in veterinary education statewide.

This position offers a unique opportunity to join a growing academic initiative within a rapidly expanding veterinary sciences environment. Utah State University has recently established a new College of Veterinary Medicine with a state-of-the-art facility scheduled for completion in Summer 2026.

This is a 9-month academic year appointment. Opportunities for summer teaching may be available contingent upon programmatic needs and available funding.

Responsibilities

Teaching:

  • Deliver hands-on laboratory and clinical instruction in veterinary technical skills courses.
  • Teach and supervise laboratory sections associated with core veterinary technology courses.
  • Provide direct instruction in technical competencies such as clinical nursing laboratory techniques animal handling and patient care.
  • Assess student skill acquisition using standardized competency-based evaluation methods.
  • Mentor and support students in development of clinical skills and professional readiness.

Laboratory and Clinical Instruction Oversight:

  • Oversee operation and instructional use of teaching laboratories including:
  • Veterinary Technology Instruction Laboratory
  • Veterinary Technology Teaching Clinic
  • Anatomy Laboratory
  • Veterinary Technology Animal Handling Laboratory
  • Coordinate with personnel at university animal units to facilitate large animal instructional activities including the Utah Agricultural Experiment
  • Station Animal Science Farm Equine Center and Caine Dairy.

Program Participation:

  • Collaborate with program faculty to support curriculum implementation and instructional quality.
  • Assist in maintaining instructional materials laboratory equipment and clinical teaching resources.
  • Contribute to development of hands-on training modules and instructional exercises.

Service:

  • Participate in service activities at the department college or university level.
  • Engage with professional organizations and community partners relevant to veterinary technology education.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT LVT or RVT) from an AVMA-accredited program.
  • Eligible for veterinary technician licensure in Utah.
  • Demonstrated expertise in veterinary technical skills and clinical procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with students faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally within Utah for instructional activities.
  • Valid drivers license to perform essential job responsibilities such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clinical experience as a veterinary technician in small animal large animal or mixed practice.
  • Experience teaching training or mentoring veterinary assistants or technicians.
  • Demonstrated leadership organizational or supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing laboratory or clinical instructional environments.
  • Familiarity with competency-based technical skills assessment.
