JOB TITLE: Cath Lab Registered Nurse (RN)
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Cath Lab Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular and peripheral vascular procedures in the ASC setting. The RN functions in pre-procedure intra-procedure and post-procedure phases of care while ensuring compliance with CMS ASC Conditions for Coverage infection control standards and patient safety regulations.
REQUIREMENTS:
Active RN license (Pennsylvania or Multi-state)
Minimum 12 years critical care or cath lab experience preferred
BLS and ACLS required
Moderate sedation training preferred
CLINICAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation
- ACLS certification (required)
- Moderate sedation competency validation
- Hemodynamic monitoring proficiency
- Knowledge of:
- Anticoagulants and antiplatelets
- Contrast safety protocols
- Radiation safety principles
- Ability to respond to emergencies until transfer if needed
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pre-Procedure Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments including:
- Cardiac history and physical review
- Medication reconciliation (anticoagulants antiplatelets insulin etc.)
- Allergy and contrast risk screening
- Renal function review (baseline creatinine/GFR)
- Verify informed consent.
- Initiate IV access and administer pre-procedure medications.
- Ensure proper site preparation (radial/femoral).
- Confirm NPO status and procedural time-out compliance.
- Educate patients and families regarding procedure and post-care instructions.
Intra-Procedure Responsibilities
- Circulate and/or monitor during:
- Diagnostic cardiac catheterizations
- PCI (percutaneous coronary interventions)
- Peripheral angiography and interventions
- Loop recorder insertions
- Cardiomems
- Monitor conscious sedation per CMS and PA state regulations.
- Continuously monitor:
- Hemodynamics
- Cardiac rhythm
- Oxygen saturation
- Blood pressure
- Assist physician with sterile technique and equipment preparation.
- Document medications contrast volume and procedural events in real time.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies (arrhythmias hypotension contrast reactions).
- Operate defibrillator and emergency equipment.
Post-Procedure Responsibilities
- Recover patients in PACU or monitored recovery area.
- Assess access site (radial/femoral) for bleeding or hematoma.
- Monitor distal pulses and vascular status.
- Manage sheath removal.
- Manage radial band removal.
- Provide discharge education:
- Activity restrictions
- Wound care
- Medication instructions
- Emergency warning signs
- Ensure discharge criteria are met per ASC policy.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods
- Ability to wear lead apron during procedures
- Lift and transfer patients as needed
- Respond quickly in emergency situations
