Job Summary

Job Goal:To provide nursing care and paraprofessional assistance in the implementation of classroom programs.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum licensure is the possession of a current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License.
  2. Current CPR Certification for Healthcare Providers
  3. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/ or certification/ licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  4. At least one (2) years experience in a hospital or community health setting.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Background CheckRequired: (Ala. Code 16-22A-5) Upon offer of employment employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks must not be more than 10 years old.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of the school system rules administrative procedures local board policy and state and federal rules and regulations.
  2. Effective written and oral communication skills.
  3. Basic computer skills.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents and school faculties.
  5. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast- paced high-intensive work environment.
  6. Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
  7. Ability to work with children with disabilities.
  8. Knowledge of problems related to the needs of special needs students.
  9. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for working with special needs students.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provides nursing care for students requiring special health procedures as delegated by the supervising nurse.
  2. Coordinates with supervising nurse to update and maintain students Individualized Health Care Plans.
  3. Authorizes exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  4. Follows up on identified health problems of students with supervising nurse parents and other health professionals.
  5. Administers first aid in accordance with established first aide procedures.
  6. Assists students with medications according to approved procedures.
  7. Enforces the guidelines of the School Districts health policies.
  8. Assists teacher(s) of disabled children with specific health needs.
  9. Works with individual students who need special attention.
  10. Assists in the guidance of independent study enrichment work remedial help and follow-up work as specified by the teacher(s).
  11. Performs academic therapeutic and recreational tasks under the supervision of a certified teacher(s).
  12. Works with small groups of students to reinforce and to re-teach when necessary material initially introduced by the teacher(s).
  13. Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack break personal hygiene/clothing needs ect. as directed.
  14. Assists with the supervision of students during lunch periods assemblies physical education activities off-campus excursions and testing.
  15. Assists with routine classroom clerical and housekeeping duties
  16. Participates in nursing professional development activities and para-professional training as mandated by the State Department of Education.
  17. Maintains proper and accurate documentation.
  18. Adheres to rules and regulations and maintains confidentiality of information as required by school policy.
  19. Maintains and exhibits a high level of ethical and professional standards as expected of all personnel.
  20. Takes leave time in accordance with Board policy and report all absences according to Board procedures.
  21. Performs other related and equitable duties as may be assigned.

  • This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.
  • Under the Students First Act of 2011 no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

Expected Employment:187 days/8 hrs (full contract)

Evaluation:According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines.

Salary Range:According to Madison City Schools Salary Schedule (Salary based on employment for complete year). Up to 10 years experience will be counted for new employees who provide documentation of full-time experience in the area of concentration.
