Work Schedule
Monday through Wednesday 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. 3:30 pm on Thursdays and Fridays when the museum is open to the public. The Community Engagement Intern is expected to be on-site most days with approval the potential to work remotely on select Mondays and Tuesdays.
An Introduction to Glenstone Museum
Founded with the mission to seamlessly integrate art architecture and nature Glenstone is a world-class contemporary art museum in Potomac Maryland. Opened in 2006 and expanded in 2018 the museum welcomes visitors to a unique experience of indoor and outdoor spaces enveloped by 300 acres of organically maintained meadow and woodlands. Admission is always free.

Position Overview
The goal of the internship program at Glenstone is to cultivate the next generation of the workforce by exposing interns to various professional pathways in the museum collaboration with their department interns can expect to gain professional experience by supporting specific departmental initiatives and projects. Interns are encouraged to connect with fellow team members throughout the organization to gain knowledge and build lasting relationships.
The Community Engagement (CENG) Department leads organization-wide initiatives that enable Glenstone to be a community anchor to our local audiences. The department works with museum-wide partners to enrich youth engagements and community collaborations through meaningful encounters with art architecture and nature.
The Community Engagement Intern will have the opportunity to support Glenstones Summer youth and community programs. These opportunities include:
  • Shadowing the department over the last two weeks of the school visit season and taking the lead with the summer guided visit season for practical experience in managing group visits with youth in a museum environment.
  • Supporting Montgomery Countys Summer RISE program and working with high school students who are experiencing their first job in their field of interest. This will be an opportunity to learn and design youth career-learning experiences in sustainable capacities for an organization.
  • Participating in local community festivals including the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival the DMVs largest cultural celebration dedicated to honoring and uplifting historic Black communities in our region as well as Montgomery Countys Pride in the Plaza in Silver Spring to engage with communities outside of Glenstones physical site and learn about facilitating meaningful encounters with potential first-time visitors.
  • Throughout their time the intern will research and compile information on art and artists on view to generate content for teacher guides and learn about developing educational resources to expand and empower self-led opportunities with their students.
Woking on these projects will provide the opportunity to collaborate across many departments within the organization especially with Visitor Experience Communications Collections Grounds Engineering and Maintenance and People & Culture.

The Community Engagement Intern should have an interest in art architecture nature sustainability innovative technology and/or other focus areas important to the museum. An ability to be flexible and adjust accordingly to new circumstances is critical for success in this role. Other attributes for success in this role include:

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Community Engagement team in preparing and breaking down materials from school visits.
  • Support guided summer youth group visits and take lead with greeting and orchestrating the guide team.
  • Support Community Engagement department in managing 5 Summer RISE students participating in a month-long career-learning program.
  • Support Glenstones table at special weekend events (schedule will be adjusted to accommodate these days).
  • Complete research on art and artists on view to build a library of content for new teacher guides to launch with the school year.
  • Attendance at weekly check-ins with Community Engagement Manager and biweekly Community Engagement department meetings.
  • Attendance at all-staff meetings.
  • Attendance at all intern check-in meetings scheduled by the Learning & Development department.
  • Creation and delivery of an all-staff presentation at the end of the internship.
Required Skills & Experience
  • A self-starter able to take direction run with a task ask good questions and enhance a project.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Suite.
  • Willingness to collaborate with peers associates and work successfully both as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Strong intercultural competence communication planning and organizational skills.
  • Desire to learn and implement best practices including those unique to Glenstone.
  • Adaptability and adherence to Glenstones core values.
  • Experience working with youth audiences and/or teachers schools or out-of-school programs.
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor to adapt to schedule changes and unforeseeable circumstances that arise.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation to and from Potomac MD.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Genuine interest in art architecture and nature.
  • An ability to communicate in a second language preferably Spanish Amharic French Mandarin or American Sign Language (ASL) to engage with the diverse communities of Montgomery County.
  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Cloud.
