East Sussex County Council is inviting volunteers to sit on independent school admission appeal panels. Serving as a panel memberis a fulfilling opportunity for those looking to make a meaningful impact in the local community. No prior experience is necessary just a genuine desire to ensure a fair process for all.
School admission appeals occur when parents and/or carers challenge a decision not to offer their child a place at a primary or secondary school. Hearings are typically held at County Hall Lewes with the busiest time being from spring to summer.
As a panel member you will review case papers prior to the hearing engage in the appeals process by attending the hearing and collaborate with fellow panel members to determine whether to uphold or dismiss an must be sensitive to parents concerns while balancing the pressures on local schools. Strong literacy communication and listening skills are essential for this role along with the ability to maintain objectivity and impartiality.
We offer training and the opportunity to observe hearings as part of your induction. This role is voluntary but out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
