:59 PMCBC is looking for an experienced multi-platform journalist to join our newsroom in Montreal.
You will be part of the action as a mobile journalist in the field. You will file stories and do live reports for radio for our digital and streaming video platforms and write for our website and live pages.
You are a motivated bilingual self-starter who is passionate about daily news and can deliver on our CBC News mission to be with the audience every day making sense of the world together live and on-demand.
You will cover stories in the Montreal area including those that are of importance to the English-speaking communities. You understand the diverse and changing population in Montreal and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.
You put audience needs at the centre of your journalism ensuring your work highlights a broad range of perspectives experiences and points of view especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media.
You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
A strong candidate for this position would be someone who is innovative open to trying new things and inspires others to do the same. You are adventurous and embrace the spirit of experimentation with your storytelling in order to reach new and younger audiences across our platforms.
In this role you will have an uncompromising attention to detail and accuracy and ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair balanced accurate thoughtful and immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.
Note: At the time of this posting the Journalist shift will be from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. However the journalist must also be able to work flexible hours and possibly weekends.
Responsibilities:
Cover the English-speaking communities in the Montreal area.
Keep up with current events
Propose and receive topics for news stories
Gather and tell stories on current affairs radio programming
Prepare live broadcasts from the field.
Cover breaking news for all platforms (radio digital streaming social television)
File directly to our digital properties (including social media) as needed
Research write scripts and book guests to be interviewed by a radio program host
File simple produced video packages from the field
File packaged items and clips for radio
Drive outreach engagement and programming to connect with existing and potential audiences in Montreal and surrounding areas.
Inform newsroom coordinators of any event requiring immediate broadcasting or special treatment
On request review the texts of other journalists and contribute to their reports
Drive a news vehicle
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
a) Knowledge:
A Bachelors degree in Journalism
A minimum of three (3) years of journalism experience or equivalent
Excellent knowledge of current events. Specifically a deep knowledge of English-speaking communities in the Montreal area and surrounding areas
Solid command of communication techniques specific to the medium (radio television or new media) as well as interview techniques
Must possess a valid drivers license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canadas insurance company
Knowledge of CBCs journalistic standards and practices
b) Skills:
Initiative
Comfortable on air. Strong broadcast skills
Able to present a subject clearly and concisely
Innovative with a command of new technology
Able to analyze synthesize and think critically
Able to work under pressure
Advanced level for English (reading/writing/speaking)
Good spoken French and French comprehension
Excellent understanding and use of social media
Must be flexible to work all shifts and irregular hours depending on the assignment.
